S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport’s, 10-Minute Mindfulness: 71 Simple Habits for Living in the Present Moment presents techniques to promote stress reduction and improve overall wellbeing. There are many different strategies presented in the book, and incorporating them into one’s schedule can result in a variety of benefits. I chose to read this book because I felt it could help me with some of the challenges I face in my life, as well as improving my overall lifestyle. I will discuss why I chose this book, topics that I found particularily interesting, other sources that agree with the methods described and how these methods will impact my personal life.

Being a nurse, full-time student, and having a family to care for, I frequently find myself faced with challenges that test my limits both physically and emotionally. Reading this book has allowed me to take moments throughout each day to focus on the present and appreciate life.
Two Topics of Interest
There were many topics discussed in Scott and Davenport’s 10-Minute Mindfulness: 71
Simple Habits for Living in the Present Moment that caught my interest. One particular topic included being present with family. Scott and Davenport state, “express love and appreciation to each of your family memebers every morning, and let them know how much you value them”
(Scott and Davenport, 2017, p.83). This statement, though straightforward, is elemental to
MINDFULNESS maintaining a healthy and happy family. With the stressors of everyday life, I am constantly

using my fiancé to communicate my stress and challenges. Prior to reading this book, this became so routine and I never showed appreciation for those small moments. I am incorporating better mindfulness to now leave a lot of my work and school stressors outside of the home. In

This process can be applied to all families with and without children. The concepts of time spent and attentiveness can apply to anyone living under the same roof to improve connections. According to Zivnuska et al, “mindfulness at work will improve both components of employee well-being by diminishing psychological distress and augmenting job satisfaction” (Zivnuska et al, 2016). This statement corroborates with Scott and

Taking a few minutes throughout each day to reflect on your job purpose can provide a variety of benefits from increased productivity to overall wellbeing.
Practice Application
The information that I gained reading this book will greatly help me throughout my career. Working in a fast-paced, high intensity environment can be overwhelming and begin to take a toll on one’s mental wellbeing. Learning strategies to deal with and mitigate the stressful situations can have positive outcome on one’s personal life. In my personal practice, there are many helpful tips from the book that I can implement. Overall, I am grateful for the advice and tips that I learned from reading this book, and I will continue to research strategies to balance my
work
