Lazarillo de Tormes

Lazarillo de Tormes is a satirical portrayal of society and that focus on the lives of the lower classes. Lazaro, serves several masters over the course of his life; each master has a different social status and give an insight into the Spanish society. The novel criticizes the hypocrisy of the church and the ills of the society. This the first time we have a commoner as a protagonist; all the other literature works we have read so far main character were either a king knight or a god. Lazaro was born in a river and he is the son of a thief and a prostitute. Poverty and hunger are one of the themes in the novel. Throughout the novel he is constantly hungry and feels the need to feed himself. His first master the blind man, he accuses him of being greedy and not feeding him that why he has to resort to stealing food in order to survive “ he used to place a little jug of wine at his side when we ate, and I very quickly grabbed it, gave it a couple of quit kisses”.…

Lazarillo de Tormes depicts 16th century Spain through a sour and ugly lens that leaves an impression that Spain bred nothing but misfortunes – poverty, starvation, deception – especially for the character Lazarillo.
