Species

A group of organisms that is distinct from any other group of organisms. They share common characteristics and are capable of reproducing with each other to produce fertile offspring.

Sexual Reproduction

Reproduction involving two individuals and results in genic variation.

Genetic Variation

Arises due to spontaneous mutation and genetic recombination of an organisms DNA.

Natural Selection

Promotes the adaption of an organism to its environment by acting on these variations and selecting for the traits that better enable the organism to compete, survive, and reproduce.

Speciation

If the adaptations nessasary for the organism to survive are fundamentally different from the original organism, a new species may develop.

Population

Members of a species that are living in the same area and sharing reasorses.

Community

Populations of different species in an area.

Niche

An organism's habits and habitat withing the community. Ex What it eats; what effect it has on the habitat and other species.

Interspecies compitition

When two species compete for the use resources.

Resource Partitioning

Similar species dividing resources among them.

Symbiotic Assosiations

Interaction among different species. At least one member benefits.

Commensalism

When one organism benefits but the other doesn't benifite and isn't harmed. Ex robin, tree; Shark, Remora.

Mutualism

A situation when both organisms benifit. Ex fungus, algea(lichen).

Parastism

When one organism is benifeted and another is harmed. The one that gains is the Parasite. The one that was harmed is the host. Ex viruses; bacteria; fungi; leaches.
