Define chondrocytes?

Cells

What is extracellular Martix?

Jelly like substance and fibers

Hyaline Cartilage?

Provides support with flexibility and resilience

Elastic cartilage?

Resembles hyaline, contains stretchy elastic fibers and is able to conduct repeated bending

Fibrocartilage?

Great tensile strength

Perichondrium?

Connective tissue, covering the hyaline cartilage and converts to periostum (double layered membrane that covers external surface of bone except joints)

Appositional Growth?

Cartilage forming cells in the surrounding perichondrium (Connective tissue) secrete new matrix against the external face of the existing cartilage tissue.

Interstitial growth?

The lacunae bound chondrocytes divide and secrete new matrix, expanding the cartilage within

Functions of the skeleton?

Support, protection, anchorage of muscles, mineral growth, bloodcell formation, fat storage, hormone production

Axial skeleton?

Forms the long axis of the body. Includes the bones of the skull, vertebrae and rib cage

Appendicular skeleton?

Consists of upper limbs and lower limbs and shoulders

Types of bones and definitions?

Long bones have a shaft and two ends, includes limbs.

Short bones, roughly cube shaped.

Flat bones, are thin flattened and a bit curved.

Irregular bones, complicated shapes.

Gross anatomy of bones?

Spongy bone is the internal layer of bone.

Compact bone the external layer of bone.

Trabeculae?

A honey comb or small needle like or flat pieces of bone.

Diaphysis?

Shaft that forms the long axis of bone

Epiphyses?

Bone ends

Epiphyseal line?

Located between the diaphysis and epiphyses of an adult ling bone, a remnant of the epiphyseal plate (growth plate in children)

Periosteum

Double layered membrane that covers external surface of bone except joints.

Endosteum

Covers internal bone, connective tissue membrane.

Hemotopoietic tissue?

Red bone marrow

Types of bone markings?

Projections- Bone markings the bulge outward from the surface.

Depressions and openings- Allow nerves and blood vessel to pass.
