1.1 Skeletal Systems
P1 Describe the structure and function of the skeletal system.
In the following diagram on the right, The Axial Skeleton is shown in red and the Appendicular skeleton is shown in blue respectively.
Five Different Types of Bones
According to the shapes of the bones and their structure, bones can be classified accordingly.
The main 5 types of bones (in terms of their shape) are listed together with brief descriptions and examples of each.
1. Long Bones
2. Short Bones
3. Flat Bones
4. Irregular Bones
5. Sesamoid Bones Bone types
(Classified by shape) Description Example(s)
1. Long Bones
"Long bones" are longer than they are wide.

They consist of a shaft and are generally curved. • Femur (leg bone)
• Tibia (leg bone)
• Fibula (leg bone)

Short Bones
"Short bones" are usually cuboid-shaped and small in size. • carpal bones
• tarsal bones (wrist bone)
• Hamate bone (wrist bone) and other wrist bones = carpal bones
• Cuboid bone (ankle bone)

3. Flat Bones
"Flat bones" as the name suggests, have a thin shape. They can sometimes offer mechanical protection to soft tissues. • Cranial bones (protecting the brain) o Frontal bone o Parietal bones
• Sternum (protecting organs in the thorax)•
4. Irregular Bones
"Irregular bones" do not have a standard shape. These bones have different purposes in the body. • Atlas bone
• Axis bone

• Hyoid bone

5. Sesamoid Bones
"Sesamoid bones" are usually the bones that are found in the joints of the body.
Majority of the sesamoid bones are un-named. • Knee caps Extra bone type
(Classified by location) Meaning / Description Example(s)
Un-named bones.
(6.) Sutural Bones
Sutural bones are tiny bones that are found specifically within the sutural joints that are between the cranial bones. Their classification is based on their location in the body and not based on shape.

The change in the pelvis over the years is clear and gives the anthropologists a small range to work with when attempting to identify their skeleton. Adult pelvises are complex; they are made of three rugged bones: the sacrum, the right innominate bone and the left innominate bone. Before puberty both innominate bones consist of three separate bones. From the late teens years until about age fifty, the pelvic bone undergoes dramatic changes that are great for determining age of a…

1.One anatomical feature in the vertebra is called the parapophysis which is part of transversal processes in the vertebrae. Transversal processes is a protuberance where that feature projects outward from the side of the vertebrae. Because the parapophysis is located on the dorsal side of the neural spine, one of its functions would be to help form a wide ribcage and provide sufficient space for a big gut. It marked the spot in my notebook and gave it a locality number. As I was writing that down, I noticed another piece of bone a few yards away. This was a distal femur—the lower end of a thighbone—also very small. This was a split up the middle so that only one its condyles, or bony bumps that fitted into the shinbone to make a knee joint, was attached.” (Johanson, Edey pg. 155)…

Bone is the main structural component of the body. Bones protect the body, they are the framework of the body, and they make it where on is just not a blob on the floor. A lot of time when one gets cancer in the bones it is an advanced form of cancer that has spread from elsewhere in the body. This is called metastatic cancer.(cancer.org) Other types include cancers that start in blood cells of the bone marrow.…

Cylindrical in shape, these bones consist of a shaft of compact (cortical) bone and are longer than they are wide. Spongy (cancellous) bone is found at the expanded ends, covered by a layer of compact bone. There is a central medullary cavity. The femur or metacarpals would be examples of long bones.…

Those being a finger bone, two teeth, and a toe bone. Although these bones do give us some clues to their physical appearance, and even the gender of the extinct Denisovan. The finger bone, for example is strangely large and broad and belonged to a female, allowing us to infer the Denisovans were possibly a similar physical type compared to Neanderthals. The tooth, however has not provided researchers with any new discoveries on its morphological characteristics, other than having similarities to Homo erectus teeth (Reich, Genetic). However the last finding of the toe bone has revealed through extensive testing that Homo sapiens sapiens did in fact interbreed with Denisovans and have hybrid offspring (Zimmer, toe).…

Compact bone, the strongest of the bones, consists of two outer layers, and it keeps the other more delicate layers safe. It is the foothold for your body and muscles because it is used when doing physical activities such as walking, running, or jumping. Spongy bone is hard and in a solidified state similar to compact bone. When looked at microscopically, however, spongy bone falsely appears to be soft and flexible like a kitchen sponge. It is found at joints and edges of the whole bone and forms roughly one fifth of all the bones in the body.…

A H. ergaster male partial hip bone, KNM-ER 3228 is an example of this. “In most of its features this specimen resembles modern human male hip bones. This is especially true for functional features related to weight transfer from the trunk to the pelvis and within the pelvis, and to the effective action of musculature arising from the pelvis during the performance of the modern human type of bipedalism” (Rose, 1984, p 371). An additional indication to a more fully developped bipedalism is the lumbar and thoracic curvature of the spine, as well as the shape of the ribcage as seen in KNM-ER 15000 (Latimer et al,…

From the “Homologous Structure Comparison” activity, I observed a picture that shows the bone structures of a human’s arm, a bird’s arm, and a bat’s arm. The bones of the arms looked similar and even have the same features, just in different shapes and sizes. The arms from the bird and the bat both have a hand that is spread out, while the hand from a human arm is structured much closer. This means that homologous structures of mammals are similar. They have the same features, but have different traits and are used for different purposes.…

To understand the Musculo-Skeletal system and how it is suited to the functions that it performs for the body you first need to understand how the system works and what it is responsible for. It is comprised of two separate systems working together as one to provide the body with physical support, the ability to move and protection for its major organs. These two systems are the Skeletal System and the Muscular System and they contain the following:-  Bones of the skeleton  Muscles  Cartilage  Tendons  Ligaments  Joints  Connective tissue binding to the body’s organs If you break the system down into its separate parts you can gain a deeper understanding of how they create a joint working system within the body.…

The adult human skeletal system consists of 206 bones, in which are held together by a network of ligaments, tendons and cartilage that connect them together. Besides movement the skeleton also provides protection to vital organs such as our brain, our heart, lungs and abdominal organs. Although our skeleton provides us with such protection it is still prone to injury, wear and tear, infections, tumors and other conditions that can damage bone and become life threatening. OSTEOMYELITIS Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone or bone marrow; inflammation due to infection. Osteomyelitis is caused by a bacterial infection.…
