Involves threat/use of physical violence. Does not always involve vaginal penetration, but seems to be more of an attempt to degrade the woman.

3.As a way to control his wife.

What are the ways men nuetralize the act?

Men more likely to severely assault women. The neutralize the violent act in one of three ways.

1.) blame the victim for provoking.

2.) Minimizing the harm done (it was just a slap)

3.)Attributing the violence to some problem beyond their control. They may developed PTSD or battered woman syndrome. THe latter typically ends with the wife murdering her abuser.

Why don't some battered wives leave?

Overwhelming of majority do leave. However, those that stay stay because they have no means of employment, are socially isolated, threats have been made to their children or themselves.

The patriarchal society that demeans women to property. Also those who have lost control of there lives to drugs, poverty, etc.

Two types physical and sexual. Sexual abuse happens more often to girls than boys, and is consistent across income and race. Fathers/step fathers are usually the perps.
Physical more likely to happen in lower class. Both have lasting negative effects on the child.

Inter generational transmission of violence: Kids who learned violence as an acceptable means of discipline will likely use it.

If a child witnesses his parents react to stress and other factors with violence, he is more likely to use it.

Those who view physical violence as proper punishment are more likely.

Other factors include poverty unemployment family problems and lack of education. Finally problematic interaction between parent and child. Unrealistic expectations and stuff like that.
