- King Charles II said James, Duke of York could have land in he could conquer them
- he sent letter to Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Amsterdam, telling him to surrender
- Stuyvesant didn't surrender unti cheif gunner told him gunpowder was damp & useless....English took over & named it New York

- Dutch West India Company sent Peter Minuit to New Netherland as colony's governor...told him no violence & give them kind words
- Minuit offered iron pots, beads, and blankets in exchange for land...Natives thought no one could own land, laughed at their foolishness & made trade
- Iroquois became partners w/French to stand up to Huron & French- their major rival in fur trading
