Pontine Nuclei- location, connection and functions

1. Pontine Nuclei is scattered among the longitudinal and transverse fibres of basilar part of pons.


2. Form an important part of cortico- ponto- cerebellar pathway that connects the cerebral cortex of one side to the cerebellar hemisphere of opposite side.


3. Fn.- Relay stations of cortico-pontine fibres and give origin to the pontocerebellar fibres.

Nucleus ambigus

It lies deep within reticular formation and gives origin to motor fibres of 9th, 10th and 11th cranial nerves.


Red nucleus - Location and connections.

1. It is a cigar shaped mass of grey matter which appears ovoid in cross-section of midbrain at the level of superior colliculus.


2. It is situated dorsomedial to substantia Niagara. It is highly vascular and contains an iron pigment in cytoplasm of its cells.
