what is the allowable drinking water PH before it has to be treated

6.5- 8.5PH

RO fiter system downsides

low water pressure, doesn't kill bacteria, can have a lot of waste water, expensive, hard on piping systems

upsides of an RO system

the only way to get rid of TDS (total dissolved solids) other than distillation, basicly gives you perfect water.

what is used in small-scale ph correction

calcium carbonate (lime stone)

what is used in a large scale PH correction

sodium carbonate (soda ash)

what are different forms of a basic filter

sand filter, sediment filter

what is the main process in a wather softener

to remove CALCIUM and MAGNESIUM through ION EXCHANGE with ZEOLITE or POLYSTYRENE

how does backwashing/ regen cycle work with a water softner

the flow is reversed in the softner and that allows the products of the brine tank (NaCl or KCl) to go through the bed and promote ion exchange and get rid of the Magnesium and calcium from the zeolite or polystyrene and get rid of other contaminants

what are the pros of softening water

easier on fixtures and the piping system, can get rid of up to 3ppm of iron,

what do carbon filters/ neutralizing filters do

absorbs taste, colour, oder and some gasses such as chlorine and chloramine

what are some down falls with neutralizing filters

they are a consumable and add hardness to the water

what is water hardness anr how do you get rid of it

it is calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and you can get rid of them with a softener and boiling them out

what temp do youboil the water to get rid of bicarbonates (temporary hardness)

140F

what tempdo you have to boil water to get rid of cabonates (permanent hardness)

299F

what filter methods are there to treat iron

water softener, green sand, chem free, Chlorine and poly phosphate

iron treatment- water sofener

will remover up to 3 ppm of iron, must wash out the water softener and if used to treat iron you must upsize the softener

iron treatment- green sand

acts like a water softener but will have a pot/ brine tank filled with potassium Permanente (KMnO4) it can also deal with sulfates. take out 10 ppm of iron

iron treatment- chem free

the ventury will have a check valve on it and it will alow oxygen into the water oxidizing the ferrous water. it is a good idea to have 2 compartments with sand to collect the ferric iron, will need tobe back washed. takes out 25 ppm of iron.

iron treatment- chlorine

need a holding tank for the water to sit for a minimum of 20 mins and the iron will drop to the bottom of the tank, a carbon filter can be used to get rid of the smell and some of the gas. gets rid of more than 25 pm of iron
