Why were Muslims so interested in making achievements?

In the Qur'an it said Muslims should examine the world and seek evidence of Allah in all it's wonders. So, Muslims were encouraged to make achievements by the Qur'an.

Why were Muslims called "Preservers"?

Muslim scholars were translating classic works into Arabic; "preservers" of knowledge.

Why were Muslims called "Transmitters"?

House of Wisdom (Baghdad)- resident scholars transcribed works of Hippocrates , Galen, Euclid, etc. into Arabic. This made Muslims "transmitters" of ancient knowledge.

Achievements of Astronomy?

-Astronomy (Persian+Indian influences)


-named many stars in the sky- ex. Aldebaran, and built observeratories


-created catalogue of stars and a calender


-perfected the astrolabe- positions and movement of the planets and stars (helped in navigation) --> for the pillar "Sallah" so that they know when to pray and to where to face Mecca

-Muhammad al-Razi wrote books like the study measles and small pox. And treat and mind body, if Dr.'s were hopeful w/ patients , recovery would be faster.


-Ibn Sina-Persian Muslim (most famous medical scholar)-worked at public hospital in Baghdad, and wrote the "Canon of Medicine"- encyclopedia of what to learn about diagnosing and treating diseases

-Baghdad-1st school of Pharmacy


-Ammar ibn Ali developed eye Surgery (Ophthalmology)-hollow needle during the Abbasid Dynasty from 750 CE- 1258 CE

Geography- travel guides created


History- Ibn Khaldun- stressed economics and social structures as causes of historical events. He urged historians to trust sources only after a through investigation.

Achievements of Art?

-worked with wood, metal, ceramics, textiles- ni human or animal figures (considered idolatry)- used geometric and floral designs


-calligraphy- beautifully styled writing-used on texts, buildings, household objects, etc.
