Tell me about this our life rafts. |
This is one of our RFD ferryman open reversible liferafts it's sitting at an angle in this cradle so that when it's relesed it should roll strait into the water. There are three ways to release it: The most likely is that the captain will release it by using the vacume pump system, up in the wheel box there are four pumps that correspond to each life raft, after pumping the air out of the system a diaphragm in this green topped unit will decompess and trigger a spring loaded blade to cut the rope passing through the unit. The yellow toped unit is the hydrostatic release it works on the same principle but in reverse if the vessel sinks without the life raft having been released the pressure of the water at one and a half to four meters will compress the diaphragm inside the unit which will release it's spring loaded blade and cut the rope, You can also release the raft from here by pulling on this red tab which is the quick release or by cutting this webbing strap which is the only thing that holds it to the deck and in the event of an emergency you will be issued a knife along with your yellow hat and radio. The actual raft is inside this fiberglass shell made of two halves held together by this plastic banding, the force of the inflating life raft will break these open so you don't need to cut them. So now the life raft is in the water you want to inflate it. You do that by pulling out the black line which is called the painter line, it's six and a half meters long but the life raft will begin to inflate after you've pulled point six of a meter and once you've used it to inflate the raft you can secure it on the bollard furthest from the door. The red line or bowsing line is longer at thirteen meters and will reach all the way to the emergency window by the bar if you needed it to, but ideally you want to tie it on to the dolly closest to the door so that the raft is alongside the gate and you can start lowering people into it, It will take two minuits to inflate the raft it's the same on both sides so you don't have to worry about which side up it is, around the edges are yellow sacks that will fill with water that help to keep it stable in the water, once you've got 65 people on board or everyone in your section of the boat, you'll inform the master your ready to cut lines and he will make the final decision and tell you to cut free or wait for more passengers. |
