What two methods help the ISO achieve a systematic approach in addressing ISO duties?
Checklist and the use of Action Models
List several advantages and disadvantages of using checklists
Advantages:
• They provide a quick reminder of things that need to be done.
• When you are distracted, they help you get back on track.
• They lend themselves to uniformity (from person to person doing the same task).
• Archiving is relatively simple.
• Changing the checklist is relatively simple within the framework of a fire department.
• Most formats are easy to understand.
Disadvantages:
• There is no one right way to perform the functions of the ISO.
• Checklists have a tendency to be either overly simple or amazingly complex.
• Once an item is checked off, the ISO may forget to revisit it.
• To cover a multitude of incident types, the ISO would have to carry a filing cabinet.
• Checklists imply an order for task completion, especially for the new or inexperienced ISO.
• They may be subject to subpoena in legal matters.
What considerations should be considered in the design of a checklist?
• It should be formatting in simple columns.
• It should be easy to read in low light.
• Room for notes and diagrams is necessary, with space to accommodate grease pencils or water-resistant markers.
• The ISO checklist should be easy to differentiate from other similar ones (perhaps with the use of different-colored templates or big bold titles).
• A reminder area for required post incident action is necessary.
What is one of the biggest traps of linear thinking?
Underestimating hazards.
List the four components of the ISO Action Model.
Resources, Reconnaissance, Risk, and Report
Describe the four steps that help an ISO become integrated at an incident
1) Confirm the ISO assignment.
2) Collection information.
3) Confirm communication links.
4) Don appropriate identification and PPE.
List the three ISO general duties that are applicable to all incident types.
Monitor the incident.
Address personal safety systems.
Define other needs.
What four personal safety systems need to be evaluated by the ISO?
Personnel accountability systems.
Need for control zones.
Radio transmissions.
Rehabilitation effectiveness.
What are the two forms of freelancing?
Individuals without a partner.
Crews operating outside the incident action plan.
How should a responder exclusionary zone be marked?
A unique barrier tape like red and white chevron barrier tape.
An effective rehab component should include what elements?
Rest, hydration, active cooling, medical monitoring, and nutrition.
List three “other needs” that should be considered by the ISO.
• Evaluate motor vehicle scene traffic hazards and apparatus placement, and take appropriate actions to mitigate hazards.
• Survey and evaluate hazards associated with the designation of a landing zone and interface with helicopters.
• Communicate to the incident commander the need for assistant incident safety officers due to the need, size, complexity, or duration of the incident.
