The case, Code Red: Health and Safety at GH2 (Hickey, 2011), examines the total costs of injuries at GH2 in 2011. Detailed breakdowns of the direct and indirect costs of these injuries are listed and described in the injury cost analysis (Appendix A). After reviewing these costs, recommendations are provided on how the safety culture can be improved within this organization.
Recommendations
The following recommendations will assist GH2 with improving the overall organizational safety culture:
1) The employer can conduct a safety climate survey among employees. This will allow employees to voice their safety concerns around the workplace and enable the employer to address any concerns their workforce may have. Employees are currently underreporting incidents, negatively impacting the workplace, as incidents are not being reported and therefore not addressed. Higher workplace injuries result in higher WSIB premiums, while also increasing the chance of random inspections by Occupational Health and Safety. Return to work programs after injuries should not force employees back to work before safe to do so, however should allow the employer to build trust with employees and ensure suitable working conditions are available upon return.
3) This employer needs to create clear safety expectations for managers and workers. By ensuring everyone has an active role with clearly outlined safety responsibility, employees understand their place within this safety culture. This will improve the organizational internal responsibility system, as with clear roles and expectations around safety and workplace incidents, the employer worker relationship can benefit, as everyone understands their safety
