An 1846 amendment to a bill that would prohibit slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico. It failed.

Elected president in 1852.
Ostend Manifesto
Delegates negotiated in secret to buy Cuba. Their plans were leaked to the public and caused a scandal.
Clayton-Bulwer Treaty
A treaty between the US and Britain that said that any future canal through central America would be jointly created.
Gadsden Purchase
The US bought a small strip of land in the southwest for a potential east-west railroad in the south.
Oregon Trail
Overland trail from the east to the west, along which conditions were harsh.
Elias Howe
He invented the sewing machine.
Samuel Morse
He invented the telegraph in 1844.
Commodore Matthew C. Perry
He tried to convince Japan to open its ports to US ships.
Panic of 1857
A drop in prices and an increase in unemployment. It didn't affect the south much, due to exportation of cotton.
Free-Soil Party
A party that wanted to prevent the extension of slavery to the west and to keep out free blacks.
Popular Sovereignty
The policy that each new state would vote for whether slavery would be allowed there or not.
Compromise of 1850
Admitted California as a free state, divided the Mexican Cession, and employed popular sovereignty.
Fugitive Slave Law
The purpose of this law was to track slaves who escaped to the north and to bring them back to the south.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This book moved a generation of northerners to regard all slave holders as monstrous and evil.
George Fitzhugh
He attacked capitalism as more inhumane and degrading than slavery.

This proposed that the Nebraska territory be divided into two territories which would use popular sovereignty.
