Definition of illness

A state in which a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social, developmental or spiritual functioning is deminished or impaired.


Illness is not synonymous to disease.

General classification of illness

1. Acute illness


2. Chronic illness

Acute illness

Usually reversible, short duration, often severe, symptoms appear abruptly and are intense

Chronic illness

Persist's usually longer than 6 months, irreversible


Affects functioning in 1 or more symptoms

Illness behavior

Involves how people monitor their bodies, define and interpret their symptoms, takes remedial actions and use their resources in the health care system.


If people percieve themselves to be ill, illness behavior become coping mechanism.

Variables influencing illness and illness behavior

Are patients perception of the symptoms and nature of the illness, influencing patient behavior.


How they perceive illness affects behavior. Can take it 2 ways.


Example chest pain:


1.Client can ignore it.... But they could die.


2. Client gets scared...... They get it checked as soon as possible.

2. External variables

Include the visibility of symptoms, social groups, cultural backgrounds, economic variables, accessibility of health care system, and social support.


The visibility of the systems of an Illness affects body image and illness behavior

Impact of illness on the patient and family

The patient and family commonly experience behavioral and emotional changes as well as changes in roles, body image, self concept and family dynamics.


Illness is never an isolated life event.

Behavioral and emotional changes

People react differently to illness or the threat of illness.


Short term, non-life threatening illnesses evoke few behavioral changes in the functioning of a family or a patient.


Serious, life threatening illnesses more extensive, emotional and behavioral changes (stage of grief)

Impact on body image

When a change in body image such as that which results from a leg amputation occurs, the patient generally copes in the the follow phases:


Shock


Withdrawal


Acknowledgement


Acceptance


Rehabilitation

Impact on the self concept

Self concept is a mental self image of strengths and weaknesses in all aspects of Personality.


It is also partly dependent of body images and roles but also includes other aspects of psychology and spirituality.


Self concept is important in relationships with other family members.

Impact on family roles

If a parent of an adult becomes ill, and cannot carry out usual activities, the adult child assumes many of the responsibilities and in essence becomes a parent to the parent. "role reversal"


Such a change can be subtle or short term (temporary), long term or drastic (maybe permanent)

Impact on family dynamics

Family dynamics are the process by which the family functions, makes decisions, give support to individuals members and copes with everyday changes and challenges.


When parent in the family becomes ill, family activities and decision making comes to a halt as members wait for the illness to pass, or the members delay action because they are reluctant to assume the roles or responsibilities.


This often creates tension or anxiety in the family
