Class Consciousness
a.A belief that you are a member of an economic group whose interest are opposed to people in other such groups.
i.What Marxists individuals belief. They don’t understand the moral split between Orthodox and Progressive Americans.
Culture War
a.The battle for power between social orthodox and social progressives.
i.The main divide in American politics. Much of the war is influenced by religion therefore individuals refuse to compromise.
Democracy
a.The rule of the many.
i.The belief that government officials should be accountable to the people has caused the recent drop in public opinion of elected officials.
Equality
Everyone should have an equal vote and chance to participate and succeed.
The need for Political quality, not social equality distinguishes the United States from other democracies.
Equality of Opportunity
a.Giving people an equal chance to succeed.
i.Americans feel that as long as this occurs, the result is up to the individual person because of personal responsibility.
External efficacy
a.The willingness of the state to respond to the citizenry.
i.This has dropped considerably because people feel that the government is too big and pervasive. However, it is still higher in America than other democracies.
Internal efficacy
a.The ability to understand and take part in politics.
i.This has stayed relatively high. Because of our Federalism system, there are many opportunities to become involved in politics. Americans take advantage of them more often than do other countries.
Liberty
a.The belief that we should be allowed to do whatever we like whenever we like with reasonable terms.
i.This belief led to the Revolutionary war and is still a major belief by almost all Americans. It led to our adversarial process.
Orthodox (social)
a.A belief that morality and religion ought to be of decisive importance.
i.The Conservative side of the debate. Anti gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research. For school prayer. They believe that America is always right and the good guy in foreign affairs. “The Christian Coalition”.
Political Ideology
a.A more or less consistent set of beliefs about what policies government ought to pursue.
i.Political parties are an example. Orthodox v. Progressive.
Political Culture
a.A coherent way of thinking about how politics and government ought to be carried out.
i.Americans believe in five things: liberty, equality, democracy, civic duty, and individual responsibility.
Progressive (social)
a.A belief that personal freedom and solving personal problems are more important then religion.
i.The liberal side of the debate. For gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research because they adapt to modern times. They believe that America is not always right nor always the good guy in foreign affairs. Feel that they don’t need God to have a moral compass.
Rights
a.The liberty that citizens should feel they should always have.
i.Come from our history of distrust and dislike of authority.
Humanism
a.A variety of ethical theory and practice that emphasizes reason, scientific inquiry, and human fulfillment in the natural world and often rejects the importance of belief in God.
i.Why progressives believe what they belief.
Secular Humanism
a.Moral standards do not require religious justification.
i.Why progressives are for the separation of church and state.
Civic Duty
a.A belief that one has obligation to participate in civic and political affairs.
i.This comes form the Puritan belief and is usually performed by religious organizations. The battle over federal funding for religious charities focuses on this.
Civic Competence
a.A belief that one can affect government policies.
i.This leads to increased patriotism and increased political involvement. More Americans have this than do individuals from other democracies.
Work Ethic
a.Led to the theory personal responsibility.
i.The Puritan view that though people who pull their weight should succeed, while people who don’t deserve their failures.
