Most Americans believe that democracy is the best form of government and therefore, support policies that protect, value, and expand democracy. However, the majority cannot ignore the basic rights of the minority. Americans also value individualism and respect people who make independent choices. An individual’s life belongs to only that individual, so people should make choices that are right for them regardless of what others may think and value. The protection of individual rights had been a trademark of American politics even before the American Revolution and they were highlighted in the bill of rights. Unity and diversity, are two interconnected ideals that have defined and built American culture. The very name of our country, the United States, emphasizes the importance of unity. Our sense of unity is especially crucial during times of national crisis like, hurricane devastations, mass shootings, and terror attacks. Most Americans descend from immigrants or are immigrants, and many of them take pride and celebrate their heritage and cultural history. Multiculturalism is a staple of American culture, which can be observed in festivals, restaurants, and everyday life across the United States. Unity and diversity make ideals like, the American Dream
