What is a molecule?

A molecule is a group of atoms chemically bonded together (e.g. H2O, H2, CO2, NH3, NH3, Cl2)

What is an element?

An element is a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons (the same atomic number).

Elements are chemically the simplest substances & hence can of be broken down using chemical reactions.

(Elements can only be changed into other elements using nuclear methods)

What is a mixture?

A material made up of 2 or more different substances which are mixed.

It refers to the physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained & are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions or colloids

*substances present are NOT chemically bonded together*

What is a compound?

A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.

What is an atom?

An atom is the smallest object that retains the properties of an element.

Atoms are composed of electrons & a nucleus. The nucleus contains protons & neutrons.

An atom itself is made up of 3 tiny kinds of particles called SUBATOMIC PARTICLES: protons, neutrons & electrons.
