What is a molecule? |
A molecule is a group of atoms chemically bonded together (e.g. H2O, H2, CO2, NH3, NH3, Cl2) |
|
What is an element? |
An element is a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons (the same atomic number). Elements are chemically the simplest substances & hence can of be broken down using chemical reactions. (Elements can only be changed into other elements using nuclear methods) |
|
What is a mixture? |
A material made up of 2 or more different substances which are mixed. It refers to the physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained & are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions or colloids *substances present are NOT chemically bonded together* |
|
What is a compound? |
A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together. |
|
What is an atom? |
An atom is the smallest object that retains the properties of an element. Atoms are composed of electrons & a nucleus. The nucleus contains protons & neutrons. An atom itself is made up of 3 tiny kinds of particles called SUBATOMIC PARTICLES: protons, neutrons & electrons. |
