Atoms: They’re the smallest object that create the properties of an element. Comprised of the subatomic particles: electrons, protons and neutrons. For which the Nucleus contains the Protons and Neutrons, while electrons orbit around the nucleus. The atom is a fundamental piece of matter. Atoms are the building blocks of matter and matter builds up the Universe. A Valence Electron is an electron, which is a subatomic particle of an atom. Valence electrons are located in the outermost shell of the atom, these can be transferred to or shared with another atom. Valence electrons are important because they are the ones that determine the effect in a chemical reaction. Compounds are a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are bonded together. Two types of chemical bonds in compounds are covalent bonds and Ionic bonds. A covalent bond is the sharing of electrons between two or more atoms. They bond between two nonmetals or between two atoms with the same element. Two atoms with the same or similar electronegativity will not exchange an electron from their outermost shell, instead they share electrons in order to satisfy the octet rule. The octet rule states that atoms that have eight electrons in its valence shell, give it the same distribution of electrons or molecules of an atom as a noble gas. This is called Electron Configuration. Ionic bonds are bonds that form between a non-metal chemical and a metal chemical. This is by the giving away of electrons by one and receiving by the other.
