What is gaining oxygen called? |
An oxidation reaction. |
What is losing oxygen called? |
A reduction reaction. |
What happens to metals when they react? |
They lose electrons and form a positive ion. |
What does the reactivity of a metal depend on? |
Its ability to lose electrons and form a positive ion. |
OIL RIG? |
Oxidation is loss, Reduction is gain. |
What do acids produce in aqueous solutions? |
Hydrogen ions. |
What are bases? |
Chemicals which can neutralise acids and produce a salt and water. |
What is another word for base? |
Alkali, they are soluble in water. |
What to alkalis produce in aqueous solutions? |
Hydroxide ions. |
What does a Ph scale tell us? |
The acidity or alkalinity of a solution. |
What do acids have a Ph of? |
Less than 7. |
What is the Ph of a neutral solution? |
7. |
What is the Ph of a solution 8-14? |
Alkaline. |
What do salts contain? |
A positive ion which comes from the base or alkali and a negative ion which comes from the acid. |
What do metal carbonates react to? |
Salt, water and carbon dioxide. |
Do stronger acids have a lower or higher Ph than weaker acids? |
Lower. |
What does electrolysis mean? |
'Splitting up with Electricity'. |
Can solid ionic compounds conduct electricity? |
No, they can't because the ions are locked in place and not free to move. |
What happens when an ionic compound is melted or dissolved in water? |
The forces of attraction are broken and the ions are free to move. The liquids/solutions can now conduct electricity. |
What do scientists call these liquids/solutions that conduct electricity? |
Electrolytes. |
What is the negative electrode called? |
The cathode, which is covered with electrons. |
What is the positive electrode called? |
The anode, which lacks electrons. |
Should the anode be replaced regularly? |
Yes. |
Why is electrolysis very expensive? |
Melting the compounds such as aluminum oxide requires a great deal of energy and a lot of energy is required to produce the electric current. |
When is hydrogen produced at the cathode? |
If the metal is more reactive than hydrogen. |
