Dermal papillae

It is uneven and has peglike projections from its superior surface.

Melanin

A pigment that ranges in color from yellow to brown to black is produced by special spider shaped cells

Keratin

A tough insoluble protein found in tissue such as hair, nails, epidermis of the skin

List the layers of the epidermis. What specialized cells or structures are located in each layer

Stratum corneum

Stratum granulosum

Stratum spinosum

Stratum basale

Dermis.

Keratinocytes

Desmoomes

Epidermal dendritic cell

Melanin granules

Melanocyte

Merkel cell

Sensory nerve ending

Describe the structure of the dermis what types of tissue are found in this layer?

The connective tissue making up the dermis consist of two major regions, the papillary and the recticular areas, which are composed of areolar and dense irregular connective tissue

Identify the glands found in the dermis. What is the function of each gland

Sabaceous glands produce an oily product sebum. Keeps hair smooth and soft

Sweat glands under the control if the nervous system produce sweat which is realased. Regulating body temp

What are the names of the layer that lies underneath the skin and what is it composed of?

Stratum basale- lies closest to the dermis and is connected to it along a wavy border that resembles corrugated cardboard. This basal layer contains the most adequately nourished of the epidermal cells because diffusing from the dermis reach them first.

Stratum spinosum- cells contain thick bundles of intermediate fillaments made of pre keratin

Stratum granulosum- cells are flattened organelles are deteriorating, cytoplasm full of granules

Stratum corneum- cells are dead, flat membranous sacs filled with keratin. Glycolipids in extracelluar space make skin water resistant.

Dermis- merkal cell sensory nerve ending

List the function of the skin

Mechanical damage (bumps)

Chemical damage (acids and bases)

Microbe damage

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation (damaging effects of sunlight or tanning beds)

Thermal (heat or cold) damage

Desiccation (dying out)

Describe the appendages of the skin

Includes cutaneous glands, hair and hair follicles, and nails, each of these appendages arises from the epidermis and plays a unique role in maintaining body homeostasis

Sabaceous gland or oil glands

Sweat glands/ sudoferous glands
