2.1 Barrier of skin One of the major functions of healthy skin is the maintenance of a physical barrier against the external environment. This barrier is to prevents the absorption of noxious substances and the entry of pathogens, as well as preventing excessive fluid loss from the body. This is the role of the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis, and in particular the stratum corneum. The epidermis is situated above the dermis and is composed of several discrete layers of cells known as keratinocytes Keratinocytes are formed in the lower level of the epidermis, known as the stratum basale, and gradually migrate to the upper layers of the epidermis. Each layer plays an important roles in immunity, hydration, protection, sensation, temperature and damage as to make sure skin maintain in good condition. Study have been carried out on microscopic structure of skin where layer of epidermis which stratum corneum play an important role in hydration and its lipid maintaining skin hydration by preventing evaporation of water from skin or in other word it hold moisture of skin. As mention before, epidermis which is the outermost layer of skin which characterized by thin, tought ,waterproof and also play role in prevent most bacteria, viruses and other foreign substances to enter. The main cells is actually keratinocytes and epidermis further divide into several layers called stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum and stratum corneum.According to article of skin function and structure from washington, occurance of skin dryness, its actually begin from stratum corneum layer which known as final outcome of keratinocyte maturation. To be detailed, stratum corneum is made up of corneocytes and this corneocytes is surround by protein envelope and filled with water retaining keratin adding the strength of protein.Protein helps keep skin hydrated by prevent evaporation and this cells also absorb water.Surrounding the cells in extracellular space are stacked layer of lipid bilayers.This lipid here is important to maintain moisture. The cellular shape of keratin add strength of stratum corneum. So,overall resulting structure provides natural physical and water retaining barrier of skin.
