The epidermis is the top most layer of the skin. The type of epithelia found here is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. This layer consists of 4 layers of think skin or 5 layers of hard skin and is avascular which means there are not blood vessels in this layer. On the epidermis are epidermal ridges that allow it to lock with the dermis. The cells within the epidermis are keratinocytes that produce keratin and are the most numerous; melanocytes that are in the deepest layer of epidermis and produce melanin; tactile cells that are associated with tactile sensation and connect to nerve endings in the deepest layer of the epidermis; and epidermal dendritic cells that ingest bacteria and foreign debris and epidermal cancer cells. The layers of the epidermis are the stratum basal which is the deepest layer of the epidermis and is a single layer of columnar/cuboidal keratinocytes resting on basement membrane; the stratum spinosum which contains epidermal dendritic cells and is below the above the stratum basal; stratum granulosum is above the stratum spinosum and contains keratinocytes which undergo keratinization here; stratum lucidum is above the stratum granulosum and is mostly seen in thick skin and contains flattened, anucleate keratinocytes; and the stratum corneum is the layer above the stratum lucidum made up of 20-30 layers of anucleate keratinocytes and is constantly shedded. …show more content…
It is mostly dense irregular connective tissue and has a rich blood supply. It contains dermal papillae, which are projections that interlock with epidermal ridges. The layers of the dermis include the papillary dermis which is the upper most layer and contains the dermal papillae, and the reticular layer which has the sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. This layer is in contact with the subcutaneous

    • The cells of the lower layers of the epidermis are knit together in a more consistent "basket weave" configuration, instead of a haphazard arrangement. • The barrier function of the epidermis is disrupted in the first 24 hours causing the skin to be drier than usual. • However, after 7 days the skin is more hydrated than before. Effects of Microdermabrasion on the Dermis • The thickness of the dermis is increased • The number of collagen fibres are increased and they are thicker, more tightly packed, and more consistently organised •…

As the first layer of the epidermis and closest layer to the environment, the stratum corneum is the first “port of entry” for chemicals that comes in contact with the body surface and serves as a barrier for the other layers of the skin. It is the protective covering of the other layers of the epidermis, dermis and sub-cutaneous layer. Dermal absorption is the process through…

Keratinized Stratified squamous epithelium are cells on the surface of the pinna of the ear in the epidermis. These are structurally flat cells, and although they are part of the skin surface layer they are no longer active cells by the lack of blood supply. They are pack of a keratin proteins, which main purpose is to make our skin waterproof from hazard chemicals. These dead cells are constantly deteriorating from the surface of the skin. The cells on the base layer are really cuboidal shape.…

The integumentary system is comprised of the skin’s two layers, the dermis and epidermis, as well as hair, nails, glands, and nerves. Underlying the skin is the subcutaneous layer, or hypodermis, this layer is not a part of the integumentary system but is vital to its function. Made up of a layer of loose connective tissue the hypodermis serves to connect the skin to underlying muscle and bone (142). The hypodermis also assists the overlying skin by supplying it with blood vessels and nerves (Vanputte, Regan, & Russo 149). Superficial to the hypodermis is the deepest skin layer, the dermis.…
