Skin grafts are used to cover wounds that are too deep to heal on its own or in case where the skin is missing. Skin grafting is the surgical procedure done this is use for mostly burn patients so they can quickly cover the wounds to prevent infection. Most of my knowledge of skin grafting and skin grafts come from my little sister who is a burn patient. Brittany, my little sister, has been a burn patient since 2008.

The United States navy established the first skin bank. Then in 1958 the first allografts was performed.
1987 they came up with the term tissue engineering originated in a meeting for science foundation. The FDA approved allograft for the treatment for ulcers and venous insufficiency.
Skin grafting has come a long way seeing how the people before where test to see what could be done now that they do skin grafts on a daily they are always finding new techniques and ways skin grafts can be used.
Types of skin grafts
There are nine types of skin grafts:
• Auto graft- this is when they take skin from your own body that is undamaged an healthy
• Allograft- skin in which was obtain by a donor
• Xenograft- animal skin
• Full thickness skin graft-this type involves the epidermis and dermis.
• Split thickness – involves superficial layer of skin (epidermis and just a small portion of the dermis and fat.
• Composite –made up of combination tissue.
• Artificial –consist of synthetic epidermis and collagen based dermis whose fibers are arranged in a lattice.
