Ergonomics

the study of how workers physical health is affected by their workplace

Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI):

when workers repeat movements causing stress on nerves, muscles tendons or other body parts

Tunnel Syndrome (CTS):

the most common MSI in North America caused by long hours of keying at a computer

Eye Strain:

caused by poor lighting

Headaches:

caused by poor air circulation and poor lighting

Tiredness or Fatigue:

caused by poor air circulation, temperature differences or poor lighting

Allergies:

caused by poor circulation and unclean environments

Backaches:

caused by poorly adjusted chairs and bad posture

Poor Circulation to the Feet and Legs:

caused by poorly adjusted chairs and little leg room

Computer Virus:

a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user

Anti-Virus Software:

consists of computer programs that attempt to identify, prevent and eliminate computer viruses

The main issues of focus about the impacts of information technology on the environment are:

Disposal of hardware, recycling of paper and recycling toner cartridges

Disposal of Hardware:

- the biggest problem with computers is the need to upgrade them and dispose older technology

- this creates waste that needs to be managed

- computers contain mercury, lead and calcium, all which are toxic and can leak into the groundwater if dumped in landfill

Recycling of Paper:

- millions of sheets of paper are printed everyday

- once paper is of no use, waste is created

Recycling of Toner Cartridges:

- when the toner cartridge is used up it becomes useless

- toner cartridges contain hazardous chemicals that can be harmful to humans and the environment

- you cannot dispose of toner cartridges in the trash, it must be taken to a facility

Computer Security System:

has become a major issue in business because millions of internet users can pass information

Firewalls:

deployed as a barrier between a trusted private corporate network and an insecure network, like the Internet

Intranet:

internal network that can only be viewed by members of the organization

Log-in and Passwords:

put in place to ensure that unwanted members cannot enter the network

Confidentiality:

you need to demonstrate this when interacting with colleagues and peers in the work environment so they can trust you

Privacy:

keeping the information confidential, and private

Encryption:

when data is converted in a form called cipher text

Cipher Text:

information that can only be understood by authorized people

Biometric Authentication:

the use of identifying an individual based on the physical characteristics of a person using the aid of information technology

There are seven types of Biometrics:

- signature dynamics

- typing patterns

- eye scan

- finger print recognition

- hand or palm print geometry

- voice recognition

- facial recognition

Signature Dynamics:

based on the way an individual signs their signature

Typing Patterns:

based on the way an individual types

Eye Scan:

when the iris and retina are scanned to determine the identity of the individual

Fingerprint:

where your fingerprints are recognized electronically

Hand or Palm Print Geometry:

hardware is used to identify not only your fingerprints, but also the entire hand or palm

Voice Recognition:

when the individuals voice is compared to a previously recorded voice pattern for verification

Facial Recognition:

when the individuals face pattern is compared to a previous recorded image to confirm their identity

Ethics:

the rules a person sets for themselves about what is right and wrong (not always legal), and they are subjective (unique)

Where do peoples ethics come from?

- family influences

- peer influences

- past experience

- religion

- situation

Ethical Framework:

system that a person creates when faced with ethical dilemma, ethical frameworks are deontology and utilitarianism

Deontology:

when a person chooses a behaviour or action based on a set of personal rules of right or wrong

Utilitarianism:

when a person chooses a behaviour or action that will result in good for the greatest number of people affected

Social Responsibility:

the obligation of a business to contribute to societies well being

Some Examples of Social Responsibility:

- environmentally friendly products

- safe products

- fair treatment of workers

- being honest with clients

Using Effective Presentation Skills When Delivering an Electronic Presentation:

Knowing your objective, preparation, controlling nerves, delivery of presentation

Microsoft Powerpoint:

electronic graphical presentation program:

- it lets users produce professional-looking presentations

- allows you to create different slides or pages electronically

Microsoft power point allows you to:

print slides, outlines and speakers notes
