When would the CA do the Aborted Engine Start Procedure? (4)

1. The N1 or N2 does not increase or increases very slowly after the EGT increases

2. There is no oil pressure indication by the time the engine is stable at idle

3. The EGT does not increase by 15 seconds after the Engine Start Lever is moved to idle detent

4. The EGT quickly nears or exceeds the start limit

When does the Captain move the Engine Start Lever to the idle detent for Engine Start?

After N1 rotation and passing 25% N2

During Engine Start when should the Engine start switches move from GRD to AUTO/OFF?

56% N2 if they don't move automatically

When is the Engine stable at idle?

When the EGT start limit redline is no longer shown

Ignition switch in CONT. What does that do in flight?

Provides ignition to selected ignitor when the engine is operating or in flight to both ignitors when N2 is below idle and the Engine Start Lever is in idle

What does FLT mode do on the Engine Start switch?

Provides ignition to BOTH ignitors when engine start Lever is in idle

Why would the reverser lights be displayed on the aft overhead panel?

A reverser fault has occurred

OR Reverser position doesn't agree with lever position

If the EEC displays in amber what has occurred?

The EEC is in Alternate mode

What does moving the Engine Start Levers to idle do?

Opens the 2 fuel shutoff valves and energizes ignition system

If the EEC is in normal mode what will be displayed?

ON in white: values are generated from sensed atmospheric conditions

If the APU MAINT switch is illuminated can the APU be operated?

Yes

Can the APU automatically shutdown?

Yes due to any of the following;

APU Fire

Overspeed, in which case the OVERSPEED light will also illuminate.

Fault detection, in which case the FAULT light will also illuminate.

Oil pressure is low AFTER THE START CYCLE IS COMPLETE, the LOW OIL PRESSURE light will also illuminate

Battery switch turned OFF

What model of Engine is on the 737?

CFM56-7B24

How do you supply electrical power to the EEC?

It has its own IDG on the accessory gearbox

When does the EEC automatically change modes and what mode will it change to?

When the required signals are not received the EEC will automatically change to ALTN soft mode

How is N1 thrust calculated?

The EEC uses sensed flight conditions and bleed air demand to calculate N1 thrust settings. It compares commanded thrust with actual and adjusts fuel flow to achieve the commanded thrust.

If the EEC is in Alternate mode what difference is their in power based on thrust lever position and is thrust protection provided?

For a given thrust lever position, thrust is higher and there is no thrust protection in ALTN mode

When does the EEC select approach idle?

In flight if flaps are in landing configuration or EAI is on

What is the point of approach idle?

Improves acceleration time in event of a go around

In both Normal and ALTN modes does the EEC provide N1 and N2 redline protection?

Yes, in both modes

Does the EEC provide EGT redline exceedance protection?

NO, except during ground starts

Is any overboost available on engines in ALTN mode in case of emergency?

Yes in ALTN mode advancing thrust levers to full forward provides some overboost

Can the engine control light come on in flight?

No

What does the ENGINE CONTROL light mean?

Faults in the engine control system, will only show on the ground

What does the MAINT light mean?

APU has low oil quantity

How long does the APU take to shutdown?

60 seconds

Are multiple engine start attempts allowed?

Yes, each start attempt is limited to 2 minutes of starter usage. 10 seconds between each start

When will the ENGINE CONTROL light illuminate?

Engine is operating and the the airplane is on the ground AND;

Below 80 knots prior to takeoff OR

30 seconds after touchdown

How many idle settings are there?

3

Ground

Approach (EAI/landing flaps)

Flight

What does moving the engine start switch to GRD do?

Opens the starter valve

AUTO position of the engine start switch does what?

Provides Auto rollback protection if N2 drops below a limit

If the reverser light is illuminated after landing what does that indicate?

A disagreement between the lever and the reverser position

Does the REVERSER light indicate you won't have reverse thrust available?

No, the light only indicates when the reverse thrust lever moves to the closed position

What start protections does the EEC provide during starting? Does it apply to ground and air starts?

Hot starts

Engine stall (Compressor)

EGT Start exceedance

Wet starts

Only applies to starts on the ground

When will the EEC automatically shutoff fuel and ignition during the start attempts?

Hot start: impending or actual EGT exceedance

Wet Start: no rise in EGT within 15 seconds

When will the REVERSER light illuminate?

When the thrust reverser is commanded to stow and extinguishes 10 seconds later. If it last for more than 12 seconds a FAULT has occurred

What is the power source for the R ignition switch?

AC Standby bus (first flight of the day)

What is the power source for the left ignition switch?

Transfer bus
