What is a Tumour suppressor gene |
A gene that normally slows the cell cycle to prevent uncontrolled cell division |
Define Proto oncogene |
A normal healthy gene that codes for proteins that make the cell cycle happeb |
Define oncogene |
A mutated version of a proto oncogene that is over expressed and leads to over active mitosis |
Define malignant |
A cancerous tumour that can grow and spread to other parts of the body |
Define benign |
A tumour that is not cancerous and will not spread to other parts of the body |
What happens if a cell doesn't meet the checkpoint criteria in the cell cycle? |
If the cell can be fixed to meet the criteria it stays at the checkpoint until it is fixed If the cell is too damaged or can't be fixed it goes under apoptosis (self destruct) so it doesn't divide |
What is a haploid cell |
A cell/ organism with one set of chromosomes |
What is diploid? |
A cell with 2 sets of chromosomes |
What is a polypoid? |
A cell with more than 2 sets of chromosomes |
What are the phases of the cell cycle? |
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase |
Define chromatid |
1 of the 2 identical halves of a chromosome that has been replicated in preparation for cell division |
Define centromere |
The compressed region or a part of elongated chromosomes |
