Pathophysiology:
Cells in the body go through a natural state of mitosis where they replicate copies of themselves. Once a cell realizes there isn’t any more room for growing or sees a defect in itself, the cell goes through apoptosis (cell death). However, there are instances where a cell doesn’t recognize it has a defect or mutation and it starts to affect the shape of the cell. Once this mutated cell starts mitosis, it will regenerate a lot of undifferentiated cells, which turn into a neoplasm or tumor. Some tumors are benign and do not cause any problems, but other tumors can be malignant or cancerous. Malignant cancer can spread to surrounding tissues, metastasize, and become invasive. Some cancers exist from the environment while others are inherited. Proliferation of the malignant undifferentiated cells occurs and the carcinoma becomes in situ. A

The study explains a mutation in MC1R-RHC encourages a cancer-causing pathway when red-haired people are exposed to UV radiation. The MC1R, which helps with tanning od the skin, usually is primary in protecting melanocytes from damaged DNA. The researcher worked on a series of experiments that provided that in normal circumstances, MC1R would bind to the tumor suppressor gene PTEN. PTEN acts against cancer and without it, the cancer-causing pathway opens. They found many redheaded individuals lack this suppressor gene. The researchers also recognized that if the cancer-causing pathway is elevated in activity, it actually boosts cell proliferation for another cancer mutation for accelerates the development of cancer. Wei (2013) explains that this finds a “molecular mechanism as to why red-haired individuals harboring MC1R mutations are much more susceptible to UV-induced skin damage than individuals with darker skin, resulting in a 10-to 100-fold higher frequency of melanoma.” (p.

Malignant Melanoma Melanoma is caused mainly from the intense exposure of UV radiation from the sun. Melanoma starts in the epidermis and stratum Basale layers. The UV rays will eventually cause the DNA replications which will make the cells replicate very fast making the cancer tumors. When treated early it is most of the time solved and doesn’t come back. When the early melonoma is not treated it will soon turn into malignant melonoma and will spread around the body to many vital organs.…

That is why caucasians are more immune to skin cancer because they do not produce enough melanin as someone with darker skin does. Most people believe that people with dark skin cannot get skin cancer which is false. Ultraviolet radiation is how one can get skin cancer. If an individual is exposed to the sun for long periods of time, he or she has a good chance of getting skin cancer, regardless of their skin color.…

Even though, melanoma accounts for less than one percent of skin cancer cases, however once people get melanoma, then they will have higher risk of death and one UK study found that estimated 86 percent of melanomas cases are caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. And on average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns. On the other hand, the dangers of ultraviolet radiation only happen when there’s over exposure of radiations. Actually Small amounts of UV are beneficial for people and essential in the production of vitamin D. UV radiation is also used to treat several diseases, including rickets, psoriasis, eczema and jaundice.…

EVALUATING THE EXPRESSION 15-HYDROXYPROSTAGLANDIN DEHYDROGENASE IN COLON CANCER TREATED WITH ASPIRIN According to the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF) men (black men more specifically) in the United States have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer as compared to women. Colon cancer (colorectal cancer) is the development of cancer from the colon or rectum due to the abnormal cell proliferation caused by Prostaglandin E2(PGE2). PGE2 is increased or stimulated by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and COX-1 is responsible for the baseline levels of prostaglandlins. In normal colonic epithelium 15-PGDH activity is up-regulated but in colon cancer its decreased.…

Pathophysiology Q 1.1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the name applied to two related diseases, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is characterised by abnormal inflammatory obstruction of the airways, lung parenchyma, (respiratory bronchioles and alveoli) and pulmonary blood vessels (Brown, 2013). Research shows that COPD is being recognised as an inflammatory disorder of the large and small airways characterized by remodelling and emphysematous changes in the lung parenchyma (Ceylan, 2006). Thereby this represents characteristic and adaptive immune reaction to long term exposure to airborne contaminates and cigarette smoke (MacNee, 2006).…

Melanin is what gives your skin its color, the darker your skin is, the more melanin you have. Have you ever wondered why you should put on sunscreen or protective clothing when you’re out having fun in the sun? The reason behind that is cells make extra melanin to shield you from getting burned by the sun’s UV rays but those cells can’t do all the work by themselves. Following those “rules” could help prohibit having skin cancer when you’re…

Working at the local hospital I have seen a few patients that are regularly there and admitted to the hospital for sickle cell crisis. I will tell their story so you have a better understanding of the disease and a more personal connection with how it affects people on a daily basis. Not many people are familiar with sickle cell disease, let alone how common it actually is. According to National Heart, Lung and Blood institute one in 13 African American babies are born with sickle cell trait and one in 365 black children are born with…

2.1.1.1 Skin Cancer Skin is the largest organ of the body. It is the outer part covering of the body that separates human body and the environment, which acts as a barrier, protects our body against infections, toxic substances and UV-radiation (Fuchs & Raghavan, 2002). Epidermis is the top and the outermost layer of the skin, which contains two types of cells: skin cells (basal and squamous) and pigment producing cells (melanocytes). Cancer is a group of disease in which cells develop the ability to grow out of control that can spread and interfere with the other parts of the body. The tumors can become very independent and grow on their own; however, not all tumors are cancerous (Alberta Health Services - Cancer Prevention Program: Environment…

This disease, generally, is life threatening, it causes tissues such as blood vessels, nerves, and bones to be destroyed by the cancer. Those with bone cancer have abnormal cells and when these cells get in the bloodstream, they can move to different parts of the body and spread the cancer. (Bone Cancer, 2016). Benign (noncancerous) bone tumors are more common than malignant (cancerous) tumors.…
