What is the purpose of the cooling system?

The engine cooling system maintains the diesel engine within predetermined temperatures under all operating conditions.

How is water temperature controlled on all classes of locomotives?

Thermostats are provided to respond to water temperature as it leaves a diesel engine. There are three thermostats. The first two thermostats are set to cut in at a predetermined temperature. The third thermostat controls the hot engine alarm system. The thermostats connect the companion alternator to the fan motor.


On N class locos a temperature gauge is provided.


On Y class locomotives cooling fans are driven directly from the diesel engine and are controlled by a mechanical thermostat situated on top of the radiator bank.

What are the drivers duties when a hot engine alarm occurs?

Inspect the water levels:


Low water level – ensure there are no visible leaks and seek permission from maintenance staff to add water.


Water level OK – inspect temperature gauge to ensure engine temperature switch has not operated incorrectly.


Inspect fans to ensure they are all operating.


In the event of low water or water loss the engine protector will shut the engine down and maintenance staff are to be informed.
