Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) used towards food have been highly controversial since the practice started in the 1970’s. Since becoming officially announced in 1996, the controversy has only intensified, feeling a strong resistance from environmentalists, scientists and religious leaders. While scientists, practicing the use of modifying organism, insist the practice is safe, many feel that this is a dangerous practice leading to many health issues today. Before people judge the use of GMOs, it is important that everyone first understand exactly the details of the practice. While testing modified food on lab rats in the early 1900’s, almost every rat refused to consume every genetically altered food offered to them. Then, when the lab rats were forced fed to eat their food, 7 out 49 rats died within the next couple of weeks. Jeffery Smith, a well-known researcher of Genetically Modified Organisms and food, stated that “the FDA did not demonstration of reasonable certainty of no harm of GMO’s.” As a matter of fact, “agency scientists warned that GM foods in general might create unpredicted allergies, toxins, antibiotic resistant diseases, and nutritional problems.” (Smith) So seeing that statement from the FDA leaves people with a question whether they are eating foods with a lot of unknown consequences of what these foods may have an their bodies. There have been scientists who have tried to speak up against the use of GMO’s within the FDA but then were soon threatened and stripped of the research responsibilities, never their findings able to be reported to the public. Why is there this secrecy surrounding genetically modified foods? What is there to hide if the FDA insists that consuming all of these foods are safe. Not all countries can agree with the United States in using this practice. “In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs.” (Non-GMO) Those countries obviously see that there is a very large concern for cross breeding the DNA of organism and after research have made the decision that these foods would negatively affect the human body and negatively affect the
