Animals are genetically altered for human medical purposes such as researching for diseases, growth of tissues for implants, and creation of drug products. For example, the drug ATRyn is made from goats milk and is used as an anticoagulant to reduce blood clots in surgery and childbirth. Malaria resistant mosquitos have been developed and may eventually mean we will no longer have to use harmful drugs such as DDT to control mosquito borne malaria. Bacteria have also been modified to make the protein insulin to treat diabetes, as well as human growth hormone used to treat dwarfism. There is much less debate about the use of GMOs in medicine but there are still ethical and philosophical issues and concerns.
In conclusion, there are many ways that GMOs can be useful in agriculture and medicine. Further studies should be conducted on GE food and their long term effects on humans. With the world’s rapidly growing population there needs to be a rapid increase in food production, but in the end it seems humans are trying to delay the inevitable fact that soon there will be more people than available resources and we will all succumb to the consequences of this
