Argumentative Essay On Gm Food

In recent years, the outcry of people against genetically modified food, or GM food, has become increasingly prominent in both commercial and governmental practices. GM foods have a negative connotation; people think that eating something that has been modified is going to poison their body. Not only that, but most of the American public believes that in doing this, humans are playing god, and have gone too far. However, none of this is true. So far, none of the GM food currently on the market has any ill-effects on humans. Contrary to popular belief, GM food is something that could save millions who are starving, and are most likely the future of food. The media and news only release stories that sell. In the book “The Science of Fear” by Dan Gardner, the author gives some interesting facts about how the media portrays threats such as terrorism and disease to gain revenue and retain viewership. This perfectly shows how the media is guilty of fear mongering, or scaring the public by blowing up popular issues. Most of the public takes in their news from only one source without doing any extra research. If the media is biased it leads to an uninformed public and frankly, a war on science. Consequently, A 2015 survey shows how uninformed the public truly is. In the survey conducted by Oklahoma State University, it is shown that 80% of people want manufacturers to label all food products containing deoxyribonucleic acid in their food, like how more than 90% of people want GM food labeled. However, deoxyribonucleic acid is more commonly known as DNA, which is found in every food that we eat. This shows how people blindly form opinions based on little or no evidence.
