Postpartum depression is a serious mood disorder experienced by women after giving birth. This complex disorder can shatter mothers mind, body and spirit and end their dreams of what they expected motherhood to be. Health professionals estimate that between 15 and 20 percent of women who have recently given birth will be affected by postpartum depression (Stone, 2008). 700,000 new moms each year develops postpartum depression (Veng & Mcloskey, 2007). Postpartum depression affects more than just the mom. This debilitating disease affects family members too. This can be husbands, siblings and even extended family. The first crucial step in getting the proper assistance is making the decision to ask for help with this illness. It is imperative to diagnose the particular type of depression the mother possesses. The mildest of the three is the baby blues. The baby blues are devastating to a new mom when she has planned on celebrating the arrival of her new baby. This is supposed to be the most joyful time of her life, and instead she feels as crying and happiness is gone. The symptoms that can be experienced with the baby blues are anxiety, exhaustion and a general sense of lethargy. A majority of mothers experience at least some symptoms that include sleeping difficulty, irritability, appetite changes and concentration problems. Many times all of these symptoms can be associated with being a new mom and having a new baby and the depression will be looked over. Moms just assume that they are overwhelmed and exhausted because of the tremendous change a new baby brings. Symptoms of the baby blues generally show up a few days after giving birth. The baby blues can last for several days to several weeks. The baby blues are considered to be a regular part of motherhood for most mothers and are probably caused by hormonal changes that occur after delivering a baby.
