Mindfulness is the ability to direct attention to present experiences, in the moment, with an open mind, kindness, and curiosity (West, 2016). The process is intended to assist people in reducing anxiety, worries, and negative ruminations by encouraging rational thoughts and discouraging impulsivity. In an article written by Timothy Davis (2014), he discussed how mindfulness can be utilized in the classroom setting in order to enable students to “process a broader range of information and have a greater conscious choice in how to respond to their experience”. This information substantiates the need for further study on the use of mindfulness awareness practice in the classroom setting to minimize anxiety. Two studies, conducted by Singh et al. (2007) and Wall (2005) focused on adolescent students with conduct disorder and learning difficulties. Both studies provided the use of mindfulness based approaches in the classroom setting had positive outcomes for students. The gap found by this researcher indicates that the studies were not given the appropriate preliminary training to respectively measure the results of the practice of mindfulness to reduce academic anxiety. As stated by Mayorga et al. (2016), training and preparation on techniques such as meditation and relaxation should be conducted prior to the research experiment to obtain more definite results of the effectiveness of mindfulness based approaches. This researcher proposes that voluntary participants should be required to enroll in a 10-week mindfulness technique training in order to qualify for the research study. This training would be free for participants of the research study. This researcher will conduct a study on two groups of adult college students. Group A will have attended the 10-week mindfulness technique training, however, Group B will have no preliminary training prior to the study. Further, this research proposal focuses primarily on the reduction of stress, through the use of mindfulness based approaches, on adults in college level studies.     According to Buddhism, mindfulness is “the gentle effort to be aware or awareness of the present reality,” and there are many programs and therapy methods that uses mindfulness as their core treatment. For example, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a well structured group program that teaches mindfulness meditation to relieve the symptoms of psychological, physical and psychosomatic suffering (Grossmann, 2004). Although MBSR is 8 to10 week program that requires active participations from the clients, the program has a broad benefit: according to Miller (1995), MBSR is effective method of treating anxiety disorder, and Grossmann’s meta analysis study (2004) proved that MBSR may have a positive effect on stress related mental illness, depression, and binge eating disorder.
