In Ellisa Strauss’s article, “Being Mindful About Mindfulness”, she focuses on children being taught mindfulness through meditation in the classrooms. She argues that while meditation may help and benefit a child mentally and emotionally, she is worried that these children will shape into what she calls it, “corporation humanoids”. Although Strauss explains why meditation is becoming a popular practice within businesses and schools and uses evidence to back up these claims, at the same time she is worried whether meditation will shape children in the right or wrong way. By assuming that teaching meditation in schools will turn children into “corporation humanoids”, Strauss ignores that fact that meditation has been around for centuries and whether the practice is used within businesses or schools, it benefits the individual one way or another. Strauss’s colleague, Michelle Goldberg, who she claims “has written about the way mindfulness meditation morphed from a spiritual to a self-help practice, one that businesses use to make workers more …show more content…
According to Mindful Schools, “mindfulness is a useful tool for counteracting rising levels of anxiety and depression among children. A number of studies, albeit small and often advocate-funded ones, back them up.” (par. 5) Furthermore, studies from the United Kingdom found “improvements in the mental health of students enrolled in a mindfulness program.” Meditation has been found to heal and relieve stress. Meditation doesn’t necessary require the individual to close their eyes and listen in silence. Being mindfulness requires patients, which claims to improve compassion within the person whether that is towards others or themselves.
