College Athletes Deserve To Be Paid

College athletics are some of the biggest and most popular events in the country today. There are many people that make significant amounts of money from college athletics.

However, the athletes themselves do not make any money from playing. If college athletes were paid it would solve a lot of the problems that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) faces every year as well as improve play and make college athletics stronger.

Athletes that are found to have received payment or any other type of preferential treatment or benefit are normally suspended from play for a period of time and the universities that they play for are also punished in some way. Every year the NCAA spends millions of dollars investigating alleged violations by its member schools. If college athletes were allowed to be paid they could use the money that they use to investigate violations and use the money to do something more productive such as sponsoring more service organizations.

Paying college athletes would also improve the play of and caliber of players involved in college sports, especially college basketball. Many college basketball players take their first opportunity to go to the National Basketball Association (NBA) because of the large money incentives. However, every college athlete that leaves does not make the cut in the NBA. There are stories every year about athletes that go straight to the pros from high school or after only a year of college. Many of those athletes who are less than 20 years old end up completely on their own playing semi-professional basketball in Canada or Europe and receiving no education.

Another hot topic in the NCAA is graduation rates of student athletes. The NCAA is currently considering banning teams from postseason play if their graduation rates of their athletes do not improve. Top programs such as Cincinnati and Oklahoma could face serious
