Comparative Essay

Imagine a strange man, different from any other, happens to show up on your town, brought by the sea. How would you and the other people meet to his sudden appearance? In both “ A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”, two villages receive a strange visitor from the sea. However, each village is quite different in the ways they treat the men. In “ A very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, a man with decrepit wings crashed into a small coastal city on a dark, stormy night. The townsfolk discovered their “angel” and used him. The family who had the fortune of housing this old man put him in their chicken coup. People would poke and prod through the holes in the wires at the “angel” to

He uses the same method of arrival and departure; the sea to a small coastal village. I believe he uses to show the vastness of our world and the possibilities that are out there. I also think he uses the sea as a way to connect these stories because of their very similar themes. One of the themes for both of these is the way we treat people reflect on our true intentions and selves. In the first story, the townsfolk use this strange, weak man with fragile wings to gain popularity and money. They then forget about him when something more exotic and new comes to town. The view on materialism is expressed heavily here. In the other story however, the villagers treat this strange, handsome like his is one of their own from the very being. They use whatever material they can to make this dead man more presentable. They also subtly change the way they do things just in case he comes back. These people cared not so much of who he was,but what could have been. The other theme that connects these stories is based of the other one. The theme of does outer appearance really matter. In the story with the weird looking old man, the people treated him horribly. However, in the other story, the townspeople treated this handsome, dead man with the utmost respect. So, do appearances really

Here are some ways the stories are the same but different. One way the two stories are the same is that in both stories the main characters have a valuable procession. On April 15, I attended Bird in the Hand by Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas at the California State University of Long Beach University Theatre. Bird in the Hand is about a boy who works at a theme park in Miami owned by his father who is dedicated to tropical birds. The boy, Felix, takes us on a tour of his last year in high school explaining how he came to inherit the park from his father and loses his best friend in the process. The narrator, Felix, feels caged and out-of-place, much like the imported flamingos he cares for. He considers the choices he might have made and daydreams about how his life might have turned out differently.…

The recurring theme in both poems is the obliviousness in the land inhibitors, depicting them as little minded and lacking values in which both The Wanderer and The Seafarer are trying to maintain. "Who could understand, In ignorant ease, what we others suffer As the paths of exile stretch endlessly on?" ( The Seafarer , lines 5557) In accordance to our first theme, we also become acquainted with the everlasting reference of moving out of our own realm and into the next through death. "How one by one proud warriors vanish From the halls that knew them, and day by day All this earth ages and droops unto death."…

Spoiler alert by the way. In the Most Handsomest Man, they arranged a huge funeral for the man, that being the main goal of them in the whole story, after the funeral they throw him into the ocean and name the village after him, Esteban. In the Very Old Man, Elisenda, who was the main caregiver of the Old Man, let him out to sea and watched him disappear, knowing he would live a better life without the townspeople because they’re super lame. So both stories obviously have a lot of similarities structurally, thematically, and morally, but they’re both so different and such unique experiences by themselves, so reading them both would not just be like reading the same story over again, but instead both stories compliment each other and make you think about both of them way more, gets you more “woke” as the kids are calling it these…

soon the crowd gathered in front of the chicken coop to see the old winged man, looking for answers to their questions, expecting miracles and signs of supernatural powers. The crowd tried at all costs to have his attention and get something out him “tossing him things to eat through the openings in the wire as if he weren’t a supernatural creature but a circus animal” (1). Without success “even the most merciful threw stones at him, trying to get him to rise so they could see him standing. The only time they succeeded in arousing him was when they burned his side with an iron for branding steers…” (3-4). The population sees his wings and knows that he is a supernatural creature, but his miserable look and weakness go against their assumptions, based off their beliefs of how an Angel should look like.…

Would you ever think a member of the Nazi party would save over a 1,000 Jews during the holocaust? Because Thomas Keneally’s novel and Steven Spielberg’s film, Schindler’s List is the account of one such individual. Oskar Schindler was a German manufacturing tycoon in occupied Poland who decides to hire and protect his Jewish workers from certain death in labor camps. In the novel, Thomas Keneally shows Oskar Schindler’s roguish and rebellious personality by describing his manner and appearance with descriptive language, characterization, and dialogue whereas in the movie, Spielberg does this through expositions, point of view shots, and shot reverse shot. Between the two tellings of the same story, there is a common theme in the presentation: attention to detail.…

The author of a story wants to make the reader think, they want the reader to explore the words that they have written. When you compare two different stories and with two different authors, you might think that the stories will not have much in common, that may not always be the case, and I will explain about three of the aspects about each story “The Jewelry” by Guy De Maupassant and “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. These two stories at first glance may not appear to have much in common, but if reread over a couple more times, these two stories do have several similarities, such as the settings of each story, aspects about the characters, and the overall emotions throughout the story. Although, these two stories do have similarities,…
