A man and his girlfriend sit at a table in a bar, the girl comments several times, about how the nearby hills look like white elephants. The author does not reveal either character’s name throughout the story. The two characters ' order several drinks and begin to argue about whether or not the female is going to have an operation. It is never specified what operation the characters are discussing. The man talks about the operation, explaining to the woman that he will love her no matter what if she gets the operation or if she decides not to get the operation. The “The Jewelry” by Guy De Maupassant and “Hills like White Elephants” could have taken place during the same era. The male character in each story expressed their love for the women in the stories. The women in each story appeared as having something to hide. Lastly, each story sent the reader on an emotional roller coaster, the beginning of the story was upbeat, then changed to sadness and angry, and then potential back to happiness. Each story is contrasting all on their own, however, once dissected there are several similarities to each
