The Zoot Suit Riots started when a group of U.S sailors were attacked by Zoot Suiters in Los Angeles. As a result for 7 days service men would enter barrios and attack the Mexican-American community where many Pachucos were badly beaten and stripped of their suits. What was ironic about this event was that many Zoot Suiters were seen as people who were not supportive of WWII, and America. In reality many Zoot Suiters were actually U.S servicemen, in fact one of the main leaders of the Zoot Suiters was enlisted in the Marines. After 7 days of riots, the Los Angeles City Council had passed a bill stating that Zoot Suits were to be banned in Los Angeles.…
Detroit, Michigan became the backdrop for one of the costliest and deadliest riots in United States history during the early morning hours of Sunday, 23 July 1967. A routine police raid on an unlicensed bar set off a four day long riot, “[leaving] scores dead and hundreds injured, thousands arrested, untold numbers of businesses looted, hundreds of buildings utterly destroyed and Detroit’s reputation in tatters.” The 12th Street Riot, beginning in response to the barroom scuffle, quickly escalated into a violent protest against recent police brutality and racial inequality of Detroit. Located in Virginia Park, 12th Street is the center of Detroit’s predominately African-American inner city, and plays a major role in the night life of Detroit…
Looking back, there was the Boston Tea Party, the mid-nineteenth century had the Astor Place Riot that became so violent the authorities thought they might have lost control of the city. Cincinnati exploded in March 1884 when a mob set out to lynch a convicted murderer who had been sentenced to twenty years of prison rather than execution. More recently, in 1992 a riot occurred after four white police officers were acquitted assault charges after beating Rodney King a black man after a high speed chase and let’s not forget the riots that have happened this year in Baltimore. It’s safe to say Rioting is a constant in our history. Although it may bring attention to a situation, rioting doesn’t fix the problem and often has harsh lasting effects.…
To understand the Watts Riot, one has to understand there were many causes for Negros to seek change. Many Negros in the south were subject to physical and emotional violence for many years. Negros' had decided change needed to happen in order for them to have equal treatment. Turmoil within the Negros' communities divided them; because some Negros believed the answer was to protest peacefully while many other Negros believed violence was the answer for change to happen.…
Many of the areas of Los Angeles became Latinized as Latinos revived the city’s commerce after the population decline. During this socio-economic demographic shift in the urban areas of Los Angeles, a horrific event occurred when a group of police officers were announced not guilty for the police brutality committed on Rodney King. This incident gave rise to the unforgettable Los Angeles Riots initiated by the African American community, who voiced their anger through violence and chaos towards the social injustice. Consequently, Latinos were victims of the riots killing one-third of the Latino population and destroying forty-percent of Latino-owned businesses. Additionally, the media broadcasted this scandalous event and mainly focused on…

In response to the deaths of Mike Brown (27 August 2014) and Ferguson (09 August 2014), many protests emerged throughout the nation. “The police response to the uprising was intended to repress and punish the population, who had dared to defy their authority” (155). As the daily protests went on, the police brutality of Ferguson increased as a result of “frustration that they {police} could not make the Black men and women of Ferguson submit” (156). The Ferguson rebellion became the “focal point for the growing anger in Black communities across the country” (157). The young people of Ferguson experienced daily harassment.…

Riot is a term used to define and encompass various types of behaviors that are viewed as disorderly, including violence, destruction of property and clashes with those who enforce law and order. (Andrews, 2014, p. 288). Ideologies such as “conservatism” and “radicalism” hold opposing views as to how they perceive “riots” and their effect on society,. We can look at riots from particular perspectives by examining social order and disorder through “riots” and their relationship to the political ideologies of “conservatism” and “radicalism”. These two ideologies have decidedly different viewpoints of the causes and meanings of riots and the effect they have in promoting change, or as a result , the “strengthening” of social order.…

No society is perfect and even the most advanced societies like the United States have major conflicts. When citizens feel that the government isn’t doing their job or doing too much of their jobs, the people will fight for their rights. Sometimes people revolt peacefully in the form of organized protests and march’s, but other times people want more immediate results so they take the more violent course of action and start riots. A riot is defined as “temporary unruly collective behavior that causes damage to persons or property. Until recently the last major riot was in Los Angeles in 1992, which was a reaction to the controversy surrounding the Rodney King case since then there have been major riots in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore,…
“A riot is the language of the unheard”. This powerful statement was said by the late Martin Luther King Jr., and with the amount of inequality that has been seen in all areas of life (gender, racial, etc.) paired with the lack of response, it is easy to see how upping one’s protesting tactics to a level of aggressiveness can be beneficial for a movement. However, when one tends to perform nonviolent acts of noncooperation, and gather the attention of many for their movement peacefully, they tend to generate more support: therefore, it is increasingly favorable for a movement to exercise diplomacy rather than aggression. To start things off, equality is a characteristic that should be woven throughout every aspect of our lives without question.…
I have spent most of my life overseas, and I respect the rule that says stay away from demonstrations and gathering. A nonviolent demonstration or protest could escalate into a violent riot. Some group of individuals gets frustrated over public issues such as social injustice. For example, a case in the London August 2011 London riot that caused by the police shooting of a young man of a mixed race named Mark Duggin (Kalleberg, 2015). In the United States, there were several such as the Ferguson, Missouri riot, but the 1991 Rodney King beating and Los Angeles riots said to changed America since the 1960s (Stewart, 2012).…

The Cameron government had cut budgets for police in order to increase the money in other areas they found more important, and as a result there were fewer police to go around and cease the riots. It wasn’t just the number of police that was a problem, for; “London’s Metropolitan Police was doing its feeble best considering its inadequate equipment, training, and public order doctrine, not to mention its poor leadership by politically correct apparatchiks.” In other words, they went into the fight unprepared. The police’s ideology also plays a big part in the ways in which they attempted to subdue the riot. Home secretary Theresa May stated, “The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.”…
