These adjectives perfectly describe Hoffman’s experience because what he went through and the things he saw during the war can change a man. Nowadays, soldiers come back from war sometimes with severe PTSD and the same should remain true for the soldiers that returned from World War I.
Hoffman saw people die in front of him and lived in fear that he not only wouldn’t return home but that he would die in a similar way as his comrades. His experience was grim because it was probably such a depressing time in his life; having to constantly worry about whether or not he’ll make it to see the next day. Hoffman saw many of his fellow soldiers die in front of him and having to bury each and every one of them must have made it difficult to find peace in such a dark and harrowing situation.
Seeing people die right in front of him and then having to bury their broken and bloodied bodies must have been a gruesome experience for Hoffman. Having to sometimes cram a bent and beat up body into a small hole to bury it must have been a horrendous experience to have to deal with on an almost daily basis. Hoffman saw the top of his comrade’s head get blown straight off and then saw his brains run out from his head like “soup from a pot.” Having to experience something as appalling as what Hoffman did can leave anyone feeling horrified and
