Yesenia Granados: Migrant Workers

Improved Essays
Yesenia Granados As a Mexican American I have grown up in a family where working in the fields is very common. My parents have worked in seasonal jobs since a very young age when they arrived in the United States. Both of my parents first started working in Florida where they picked tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, tangerine, orange, grapefruit among many other types of fruits and vegetables. At very young age I remember my parents taking me to the fields with them to work. I started going to work with them at the age of three. At that point in time I didn't really do much but as I started to get older I would help my parents carry blueberry buckets while they picked or whatever fruit it was that they were picking. As I began to grow, me and …show more content…
When working out in the field a person is overwhelmed by the intense heat and when working inside the packing shield it is extremely cold. In many occasions at work it made me think that I do not want to have that type of job as a permanent one but a temporary one until I am able to accomplish my goals. It teaches a person to value education and want to strive for something better in the world. My mom always tells me that I have to study hard in order to be successful and not have to face the discomforts that there are in working in these types of jobs. It motivated me to want to have an education but it also taught me how to do things in a timely manner, follow certain procedure and actually be aware of how difficult seasonal work is. I feel that by working in seasonal jobs I am more appreciative of a higher education and realize it will make a major difference. I understand that a higher education is the best for me even before I worked but actually working for minimum wage in the field made me realize of what was out in the world if I decided to not peruse an education. The work I performed not only motivated me to strive for something better but motivated me to want to be someone in life. I want to make an example out of myself that it does not matter where a person comes from; a person can always accomplish their dreams as long as they put effort to it. I want to be able to say to my parents that all the effort they put in me was really worth it. Just thinking that one day I will be able to help someone through the college degree I chose motivates me more to want to reach this

What I believe was the main objective of Seth Holmes was to find out how hard it really is to be a migrant farm worker. In the book Seth Holmes gives explicit detail on how hard it really is to be a migrant farm worker. An example on how I believe that he shows this is when he is talking to three different men Abelino, Crescencio, and Bernardo, every single one of them are asking Seth for some help medically. The reason why they did not get these conditions treated to begin with is because they do not have the time or the money to get it treated. Every single one of these conditions that these people had is because they are migrant farm workers.…

For over a century, migrant farm workers have been opposed a suitable and equitable life in the fields and communities of California's agricultural valleys. Most farmers were making only ninety cents an hour, forced to drink out of the same cup, and required to pay two dollars or more per day to live in metal shacks with no plumbing or electricity in the 1960’s. Overall, farm workers, also known as braceros, labored in inhumane conditions as growers ignored the state laws regarding proper working conditions. The Bracero Program was started by the U.S. government after WWII due to labor shortages and “this program imported temporary laborers from Mexico to work in the fields”(NFWM-YAYA Staff). However, change and improvement were greatly sought.…

for the Mexican worker. The logic and goals of the government are sound but the results are minimal, in reality maquiladora industries invest little in technology or human capital development; this trend has depressed the development of technologically advanced maquiladoras, human capital development that would diversify and develop the Mexican economy. Samstad and Pipkin establish the variance between first, second and third generation Maquiladoras, first generation factories are structured as high intensity / low skill labor operations, second generation factories marry labor with technological advancement and third generation factors make service sector and technologically trained positions central. Unfortunately, empirically this development…

In the article “A Gringo in the Lettuce Fields” by Gabriel Thompson, he talks about how hard working in the field can be and what kind of obstacles field workers deals with on their daily basis. As Thompson tries to experience working in the field he deliberately interprets how the human body reacts after working for a certain amount of time in the fields. The informal economy comprises of work activities that involve small number of workers, irregular work hours, income that is paid in cash and even, unregulated by the law. The binary is a categorization of abstract ideas and ultimately, one idea is decided to be less valuable over the other. In the case of my research paper, employer exploitation is made possible due to the binary-infused immigration policies that tend to portray immigrant women in the informal economy as helpless and in no position of power. The research question I plan on investigating is: How did the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) affect the lives of immigrant women in the informal economy of the United States? How did immigration policies like the IRCA…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
