Although workplace stress can hinder the job, it can also add positive value to the organization. Stress affects everyone differently; stress is known to cause serious emotional and physical health problems. High stress can result in depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors, and substance abuse. It can also lead to headaches, fatigue, insomnia, stomach disorders, hypertension, and high blood pressure. Once employers understand the negative health aspects associated with stress and the impact on their business, the best approach to reducing job stress is asking managers to lead by example. And your ability to deal with it can mean the difference between success and failure. Communicating effectively at work can help improve teamwork, decision making, and problem solving. One of the best ways to improve communication is by learning to listen attentively to an employee. That means not just understanding the words or the information being communicated, but also understanding the emotions the speaker is trying to communicate. When managers are engaged with what’s being said, they’ll hear the subtle intonations in their employee’s voice that tell them how that person is really feeling. Managers will also make the employee feel heard. By communicating in this way, manager’s also experience a process that lowers stress for both them and their employee. If the employee the manager is talking to is agitated, they can help calm them by listening in an attentive way and making the person feel understood (Segal, Smith, Robertson, & Segal, 2015). Sticking to a regular exercise program of brisk walking can boost a person’s immune system. Even low levels of aerobic exercise, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week, can be effective (Ray, 2012). Accepting my manager’s recommendation on attending yoga twice a week has been beneficial to my overall health. To this day, I still incorporate yoga in my daily workouts, aiming for it at least once a
