During the early 1900's the life of a woman was difficult. It was very uncommon for a woman to hold a job ,if they did have one it was usually working in a factory or department store but the working conditions were very poor and dangerous. Drehle does an exellent job of portraying many diffrent perspectives of the labor movement and women suffrage in the early 1900's. The working condtions were bad. Workers were getting locked in rooms, they were replaced if they were hurt or sick, and were underpaid and overworked.…

The war, government and were against women's rights, but, Women in the late 1800's kept striving and created several women's rights groups. Women's support groups help pave the way for women in the future and the Great Strike making it a requirement to pay women equal pay, however women are still facing if not some of the same problems in this generation. Women are still underpaid and stereotyped in the workforce. Through Harvard University Library Open Collections Program, there is a series called “Women Working, 1800-1930” . In this open collection, I was able to find two primary sources that dealt with women working in the 19th and 20th century. The first primary source that I found, was the diary of Lillian Schoedler, 1913. Lilian Schoedler was a secretary from New York. In her diary, she provides a day to day of not only her life, but also her life as a secretary .…

Working conditions in the late nineteenth century were brutal for both skilled and unskilled workers. Unskilled laborers, on average worked 59 hours per week, women and children working in sweatshops for fewer wages than men. Unskilled laborers were usually the first to have their wages cut during a depression along with having the most dangerous occupations due to lack of government safety regulations. Union started to organize to be a voice for both skilled and unskilled workers. Unions rose and fell with the greatest culmination of labor’s response to unfettered capitalism in the show of violence occurring in 1892 during the Homestead Strike.…
The American working class was greatly influenced throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries by the perpetual struggle of the sin of idleness. It was a time where leisure was beginning to be discovered and seen as a reward for Americans, as they worked their daily lives. For the American culture, the flow between working and playing provided longterm tension and led to disproportionate levels in the social and cultural norms in the 19th and 20th centuries, yet was the preceding factor to the harmony of the American working class in today's world. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the first real interpretations of the newest term 'vacationing' were given in the form of prescriptions by medical professionals. With the plight of the world wars, women began to taste the liberties and the plethora of opportunities which could be obtained through pursuing political freedom and activism. As the mid-nineteenth century moved upon the American people, women became more involved and made their opinions and voices known; furthermore, education granted women a vast means which aided in higher professional possibilities. The United Nations, founded in 1945, quantified the newly achieved success of females by constructing an international panel where women from around the world could analyze their countries and establish an understanding of universal feminism. Through the meeting, held in New Mexico City, the global group contrived the pertinent themes of, what The United Nations instituted as, the "Decade for Women". These three systematic pieces all formed the general philosophical understanding of feminism, at the time: Equality, development, and peace.…

Many other factory owners were not concerned with the health and prosperity of their workers. The only reason why was that because the owners were saying that it would cost too much money and it will reduce their own profits that they are making.…
