During the 1960s – 1970s, the main focused was for women seek better jobs and salary equality. Howard Smith (February 2,1883 – October 3,1976) in 1964, proposed to add a prohibition on gender discrimination into the Civil Rights Act. Although his attempt to pass this law was for a good purpose , congressmen greeted him with laughter. With the help of representative Martha Griffiths of Michigan, the law finally passed (1972). Although the law had passed with the amendment intact, employers remained firm about their views on women. In 1966, the National Organization for Women was found to fight gender discrimination, they assisted women to fight in court for their rights and stop discrimination in the workplace.
