Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitoring System

Improved Essays
Unless you’re a hypochondriac or someone who goes to the doctor on a regular basis, you probably don’t check your blood pressure often—if at all. There are plenty of wireless blood pressure monitors on the market that work fairly well. If you want to keep track of your daily vitals, however, you’re going to have to manually store them. Sending your results to your physician will also have to be a manual chore. Nowadays, the digital route seems to be the way to go for keeping track of steps, sleep activity, and your vitals. The Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor will help you keep track of your blood pressure and heart rate without being a chore.

When Withings sent this to me for review, I was ecstatic. I’m not a health nut, but I do love digitizing my life, including my health.

Specifications

Before we get into the rest of the review, here are the specs for the blood pressure monitor, as advertised by Withings.

Instead, the motor is housed alongside the cuff. You’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for a variety of colors The monitor only comes in one color option: white exterior with a green lining on the underside. It’s aesthetically pleasing, giving it a modern, relatively high-tech look.

The blood pressure monitor itself lacks a display for your readings. Your smartphone (or tablet) will handle those, as long as it’s an iOS or Android device—sorry Windows Phone users. On top, you have the single power button (which also enables Bluetooth automatically), and on the bottom the battery cover. On the side is a discreetly located microUSB port, allowing you to attach the included USB adapter for wired use.

2.1. Test Procedure Before data was analyzed, the Easy Pulse circuit had to be tuned to the team members’ specific pulse in order to produce transparent and accurate data. This is due to the fact that each individual person has relatively unique heart rates and pulse strengths. While the A0 pin on the circuit board was connected to the AI0+ channel on the Elvis board, P1 or the Gain was turned completely clockwise using a screwdriver. From there, P1 was rotated clockwise until the peak of each pulse were relatively close to 5V. Once tuned, data on the pulse signal was acquired and analyzed using the program Pulse Monitor.vi.…

Pearce and Nair (2015) agreed that blood pressure is the pressure exerted by blood within the blood vessel. The systolic blood pressure is when the heart contracts and diastolic when the heart relaxes (Timby 2009, p 199). In addition to this, Miller ( 2010, p 4 - 5) states normal systolic blood pressure is 120 mmHg and diastolic 80 mmHg. I placed the cuff above patient's right anti-cubital fossa when I realized I was not supporting her arm; therefore, I made her comfortable by placing a pillow under her arm. Whilst inflating the cuff, the assessor pointed me out I was holding the manometer on my hand; therefore, I rapidly hung it on the upper edge of the cuff where I could see it.…

In medical field, there are a lot that can contribute to an inaccurate vital sign reading. Some of the reason are not knowing the right way to take vital sign or not following the right procedure. Also, if we are told to take patients pulse and we didn't do it right it can lead to the false reading. Errors could be introduced by the medical assistant using the wrong-sides of the cuff. One is that a persons can change simply because of emotions or even diet, which doesn’t give a clear and accurate recording of pressures. The traditional way of recording blood pressure is by using cuffs. With cuffs you have to make sure they fit and the patient must sit still for an accurate reading. Another issue is with certain patients who suffer from hypertension and need to constantly check their pressure. Some patients may forget to check their pressure or have trouble remembering to record it and report it to their healthcare…

Most automated machines use the oscillometric technique, this relies on the detection of variations in pressure oscillations due to arterial wall movement below the cuff. Manual machines use an auscultatory method, the upper arm cuff in inflated to occlude the brachial artery and then involves listening to the Korotkoff sounds through a stethoscope while the cuff is slowly deflated (Denver 2013). There is increasing evidence that automated machines may not achieve acceptable levels of accuracy in certain conditions such as, arrhythmias and vascular disease (Wedgbury et al 2008). A study by Coe and Houghton (2002) found that “6.5% of daycase patients would have been inappropriately diagnosed as hypertensive when their blood pressure was taken using an automated blood pressure…

Blood Pressure Blood pressure , as a physiological variable of humans, is a hydrostatic pressure, utilized by blood on the walls of blood vessels.(Tortora and Derrickson 2011). It is caused by the contraction of the ventricles and the amount of blood in the whole cardiovascular system. The mean blood pressure (the average pressure in the cardiac cycle) is coordinated in order to provide adequate blood transfer to the tissues.(Saladin,2001). The decrease of blood pressure is followed by an increase of heart rate. The normal blood pressure is 120 mm HG systolic and 80 mm HG diastolic blood pressure There are three main types of blood pressure regulation considering homeostasis: Neural regulation…
