The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…

Nicolas de Largillière, a French artist known mainly for his portraits of the upper bourgeoisie, painted Portrait of a Woman in 1696 with oil on canvas. It can be found hanging in the European galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Due to a lack of evidence, the identity of the sitter has been widely debated. What can be gathered from records and documentation is that it appears to be either Madame Marie de Thorigny or Hélène de Thorigny; two women from the same wealthy family that Largillière had painted for in the past.…

This painting draws evident comparison to Napoleon I on the Borodino Heights (1897) in that Vereshchagin, using the accounts of Napoleon’s generals, painted Napoleon sitting with a look of frustration and an entourage of officers behind him as he attempts to watch what would be the bloodiest battle of the French invasion. While both paintings show emperors watching devastating battles, the focus of the painting is revealed by the framing of the scenes. Napoleon’s retinue takes up most of the canvas and Vereshchagin paints the scene with enough detail that the focus of the painting is the presence of the very human experience of frustration and weakness in times of difficulty that negates the typically idealized representations of Napoleon.…

The “Woman with a Pearl Necklace in a Loge” by Mary Cassatt is a 19th century French painting. Mary Cassatt uses oil on canvas to bring out the rich colors in the painting. The subject in the painting is likely Mary Cassatt’s sister who is having a night out at the Paris Opéra House. Cassatt is portraying the modern woman sitting in an “elite” booth enjoying herself. As you can see from the painting she is able to capture the current moment of her sister during an intermission of the play.…
