The man depicted in the painting is Jean-Paul Marat who was a writer for the French newspaper called L’ami du Peuple in which he talked down on many authority figures. His personal opinions led to the death of many people including his own. He died on the night when a member of an opposing party by the name of Charlotte Corday went to Marat with a petition for him to sign, and as Marat went to sign the petition Corday stabbed him in hopes to stop him from causing more deaths.
