The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…
William Bouguereau is a French artist who had made this painting for a “ Gift of an Anonymous Lady in memory of her father”. William Bouguereau is a very important artist of his time from 1825-1905, he was part of the official art system. Graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, winner of the prestigious Prixe de Rome, and member of the French Academy, he was also a great favorite on the art market. He had made his paintings from meaning and personal experiences. His sophisticated style and color brought magnificent attention to those who looked at the painting.…
When I first look at this painting the first thing I see is a man, and a woman with a very honest look on their face. The man is carrying a pitchfork , and is slightly in front of the woman. I look…
Due to this active painting, we are able to see the contemplation that this woman has, once again establishing this idea of validation over objectification. This painting is not only a work of art but a social…
This piece of African artwork shares a lot of characteristics with the Getlein’s artwork Gwandusu. Bamana. 13th-15th century (Page 422). This maternity figure is an archetype of feminine beauty. Both of these artwork resemble a lot.…
Different “Ways of Seeing” In the essay, “Ways of Seeing,” John Berger applies Marxism to art history. Marxism is the social, economic and political theory formed by Karl Marx. It deals with class struggle and the oppression of the lower classes by the upper classes. In the essay, Berger focuses on using Marxist methodology, when he analyzes and explains an artist named Frans Hal.…
Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help.…
I chose to write on the topic of Johnson’s Negro Life in the South and Homer’s A Visit from the Old Mistress. As stated in the prompt for this, both paintings are open to vastly different interpretations, all of which concern proslavery and antislavery. To start with, the first painting, Johnson’s Negro Life in the South, depicts a run down house surrounded by black people looking like they are having a great time.…
The sculpture is unclothed. This hyper-sexualizes the sculpture and makes it vulnerable to being sexualized by its observers (Lewis 2017:8). The sculpture “displays a prominent pair of labial lips between her coiled haunches” (Larson 2014:508). The sculpture’s genitals are completely exposed and thus perpetuates the sexualization of black women. Because of the sexualization of this sculpture, it was easy for men to stand in front of the sculpture and photograph themselves as holding “up her breasts” (Larson 2014: 511).…
Half Caste child (1957) This artwork depicts a young white girl in clinging to an older black man while a black woman is crying in the background. This painting has a historical theme because it shows a child of mixed decent during a time when this was a bad thing. The lack of care she seems to get from the older man helps show this. This painting was painted after the Australian assimilation project when aboriginal people of mixed decent were to be assimilated into white society wether they wanted to or not.…
The memorabilia in its original context is highly racist, characterizing the typical mammy figure, thick-waisted, smiling, and happy to serve white families. Saar re-contextualizes the image to challenge the idea of the subservient, asexual black woman whose loyalties lie with white families. The baby in the middle is mixed in race as a commentary on the sexual abuse black women were often subject to (M. Harris 117). At the same time the baby subverts the asexual nature of the mammy figure. The work has a bedding of cotton, referring to the past slavery, and the center most image has a black power fist.…
I observed a normal teacher workday from seven-thirty a.m. to two-thirty p.m., and then three hours of afterschool care at West Jackson Intermediate School, located in Jackson County, Georgia. WJIS currently serves grades three-five, and is one of five elementary schools that are served by the county, not including the two city school systems operating there as well. Jackson County is extremely rural, with most of the county dedicated to farm land. The area I was in is slightly more suburban because of overspill growth from Gwinnett County. Even with that, there is little to no diversity in the county overall.…
The painting was made by a Spanish painter called Modesto Broncos in 1895. In his work, three generations of the same family are portrayed. The Grandmother (black) is standing on the left looking like she is praying to God. The mother (brown) sitting right next to the grandmother and holding the baby (phenotypically white). The grandmother is raising her hands to the heavens in a gesture for “redemption”: the birth of the white grandson, who will be spared the hardships and memories of the slave-owning past.…
The phrase a picture can tell a thousand words is true, because every detail in the picture gives a message. In the third chapter of the book, the author talks about the paintings of women. How women are seen in paintings. He states that nude painting of women are available mainly for the male audience because it exists for the pleasure of the audience of the males. The book states that when it comes to paintings of nude art of women, there is a universal look on every woman’s face on every painting.…
Both infants are nude, but Saint John adorns a brown cloth wrapped around his pudgy body. All figures in the painting have faint golden halos around their heads, signifying their holiness. While these figures take up space in the foreground in a pyramidal composition, greenery surrounds them in the background. The figures are enveloped in a state of utter nature-plants spurting off the ground, the fluffy trees employed in the distance, the grassy hills, so much so that the small town pictured in the background seems to have green hues. The sky in the background takes on a muted blue-grayish tonality with faded white clouds.…
