Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help. Child Picking a Fruit demonstrates the bond between a mother and child.
The shape and lines in Child Picking a Fruit emphasize the natural connection between the mother and her baby. The bending branches of the apple tree consume the upper third of background. They surround the figures and nestle them in and together. The lines of movement created by the mother's dress show a strong softness. The child is supported

Nearly the entire background of the painting is different values of green. Darker, muddy green colors at the bottom left corner and lighter refreshing values of green in the middle right surround the mother and child. The isolation in the painting created by mostly negative space emphasises the human connection. The two are surrounded by a natural, calm atmosphere where they can find peace. Green is a very natural, peaceful, safe color that evokes harmonious feelings and symbolizes growth and fresh energy. The dress that the mother is wearing is the other main color of the painting. Pink is a very feminine, tender, affectionate, and also a harmonious color. The dress also has a pattern of springs of lavender flowers. These symbolize calm peaceful tones. Apples and fruits in artworks can symbolize a variety of ideas. In this painting, the apples symbolize life and temptation, as well as fertility. All of the simple symbols and use of colors reiterate the closeness and connection between the mother and child. They are connected through harmony, life, and natural

There is a feeling of connection between the three of them by the way they are all looking at each other and the cross. Although I could find no documentation on this, I feel there is also a symbol of the trinity in the three flowers to Mary's left side. The flowers are very prevalent and are connected to the figures in the painting by having the same color that is in the Virgin's shirt. It is also speculated that the water in the background symbolizes the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The fact that Mary is barefoot in the painting indicates that she is walking on holy ground.…

[HELP] “Virgin of the Rocks”, also known as, “Madonna of the Rocks” are two pieces of art composed by Leonardo da Vinci, who was a Renaissance artist. They were created in return for a commission by the Fraternity of Immaculate Conception on April 25th, 1483. This painting was going to be in the Church of San Francesco Grande for an altarpiece that would hang in the center surrounded by angels by other artists. The Louvre version is the first one that was created solely by Leonardo around 1483-1486.…

This artwork gives visual representation to immaterial feelings. The way it does that is by dulling every color besides the girl’s tears. It shows that she sees the world in a gray color because all of her happiness or color is gone. The color flowing out of her is showing that any good feeling she has is leaving her and she is succumbing to her depression. Her dress is sagging limply off of her to show the sad and heavy emotions she’s going through.…

Our Souls in Slow Movement, is a symbolist painting by Denis, as part of his album Amour, of two sisters sitting by a piano. The younger girl, Eva, is playing the piano while her sister, Marthe, listens. Adagio refers to a tempo marking, indicating that the music is to be played slowly, or a composition intended to be played in this manner. Therefore, Denis chooses the slow Adagio movement for his title because Eva is playing the piano, creating music. The sisters look at peace and in a dreamy and relaxed state of mind as they both have their eyes closed, focusing on the music.…

The only American artist to exhibit her work with the French Impressionists, Mary Cassatt was first invited to show with the group by Edgar Degas in 1877. By that time, she had become disenchanted with traditional academic painting. Like her friend Degas, Cassatt concentrated on the human figure in her Impressionist works, particularly on sensitive yet unsentimental portrayals of women and children. The Child’s Bath, with its striking and unorthodox composition, is one of Cassatt’s masterworks. In it she employed unconventional devices such as cropped forms, bold patterns and outlines, and a flattened perspective, all of which derived from her study of Japanese woodblock prints.…

I had originally planned to meet Sachy, Alvaro, and Victoria at the Getty, however both these plans fell through as we all clearly have very poor organization skills. So on a breezy Sunday Morning I embarked on a solo mission to LACMA. Well not really because my mother was lovely enough to accompany me. When I initially woke up that morning, I was overcome with regret of waiting until the last weekend to get this assignment done. The whole ride there, the clouds threatened rain and my mother threatened to murder Siri for making her endlessly repeat herself.…
