Education is a big problem in the community that we live in today, especially in the city of Newark. The problem with education in our current society is that students are dropping out of school. Some students feel that they do not need to go to school because education does not help their situation. The reason why some of these high schools students want to drop out of school is for issues such as home life problems, peer influence, and lack of teacher innovation.
One of the reasons why students drop out is poverty at homes. According to, “American Graduate,” it reported last fall that 22 percent of the children in the U.S. live at or below the poverty level. The American graduate defined poverty has a family with an annual income level of “23,050” (American Graduate). Students living at or below poverty level tend to have the highest dropout rates. Studies show that students who do not get enough food or sleep are less likely to perform at their full academic potential. When students get bad grades, it 's because they can not focus in school. This leads to some of them dropping out because they do not see how it is helping their problems. Poverty in an area like Newark influence this because students drop out to get a job to provide food for the family. Research shows that 284,000 more graduates will be needed in the Class of 2020 than in the Class of 2014 to reach a 90 percent graduation rate due to the dropout rate.
